Carson City arrests: Mother suspected of child abuse, toddler had face bruising, THC and meth in system
A 41-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday for suspicion of felony child abuse and neglect, according to a sheriff's office booking report.
Amber Jordan was taken into custody in the 500 block of North Stewart Street at 10:38 p.m. According to the booking report, the 18-month old child had been taken for treatment at Carson Tahoe Hospital and was reported by deputies to be lethargic and not responding appropriately. The child had numerous bruises in different stages of healing over their body and an injury to the right side of their face and eye.
The injury to the child's face showed a specific bruise pattern, the arrest report notes. Deputies saw photos taken by a CCSO criminologist which showed these injuries, some abnormal and some were in the areas that were not normal for children to have sustained bruises. This included the large bruise on the child's face and eye, and also several bruises to the child's legs, stomach, pubic region and genitals.
Doctors stated the child was severely dehydrated, and THC and methamphetamine were located in their system, according to the report.
Officers were contacted by the child's babysitter, who stated she agreed to sit with the child, while the mother, Amber Jordan, went out on a date, the report states.
The babysitter, who said she agreed to be the trusted babysitter, said she didn't even know the child's name or the mother's name or contact information. She stated she had spoken to Jordan more than once but didn't know anything about the woman. She stated she picked up the child to babysit and saw the injuries to the child and called deputies. She said she was worried the child was being abused, according to the booking report.
While speaking with deputies the babysitter had red watery eyes and her apartment smelled of alcohol. The woman told deputies she is an alcoholic and drinks every day and said she did not try to hide this from Amber Jordan during their contacts, the report states.
Deputies interviewed Amber Jordan, the mother, who told officers her child hit their head on the headboard the previous night, then later woke up, and was running around in the dark and ran into unknown items. She said the child sustained injuries to their genital area by putting a remote in their diapers before having hit their head on the headboard. The woman could not explain why the child would have methamphetamine in their system, though the mother stated she does routinely smoke marijuana, the report states.
A search warrant was executed in the woman's residence, where officers located several vape containers of marijuana, located within reach of the child. There were several marijuana containers that were not child proof and in which the child could easily gain access. There were several items, including furniture, that was stack on top of each other that could easily have been pulled down by the child. The mother stated the child climbed on top of the furniture, sometimes falling off the top of the floor. The mother also stated her child, earlier, was dehydrated while under her care.
In filing the probable cause report, the deputy wrote that Amber Jordan stated she was the sole caregiver to the child who was in her custody when the child received the injuries. The child was also in her custody when the child became severely dehydrated and in need of medical care, the report states.
The mother stated she is currently breastfeeding the child and the child returned with methamphetamine and THC in their system, the report states. She also left the child in the custody of someone whom she knows to be an alcoholic and drinks every day, with the sitter not knowing her and not having means to contact her. Based on these things, the woman was arrested for suspicion of felony child abuse and neglect. Bail: $20,000.
