Community Roots is a garden center and gift shop

Community Roots and Shoots in Dayton will have extended shopping hours for Mother’s Day weekend. In addition to many options for Mother’s Day gifts in their garden center and gift shop, they’re also hosting an outdoor rummage sale on Saturday, May 13 from 9 am-5:30pm, with all proceeds going to Healthy Communities Coalition’s food pantries.

In early 2021, Maxwell Hurt-Lewis found himself homeless and jobless in Reno. “As a result, I was running amok. I was really living for nothing,” he said. “I was making irresponsible decisions that led me to prison.”

As he prepares for his release from the Nevada Department of Corrections this year, he’s hoping the skills he’s gained while incarcerated can help him avoid returning to that lifestyle.

Students at J.C. Fremont Elementary School in Carson City will participate in the Fremont Fun Run on May 17, 2023. This event not only encourages physical fitness and teamwork amongst students, it will also raise funds to directly support the programs our Fremont community deserves and loves.

If you’ve recently driven in the area of Stewart and E. William Street in Carson City, you may have noticed a few vacancies in the landscape.

The strip mall that once held Dubois Health Food Center, as well as the shops at the corner of Stewart and Washington, have all been torn down. The site also once housed the historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad engine shops, which were demolished in 1991.

Acosta-Rogers has more than 20 years’ experience in early childhood development and has been the director of Western Nevada College’s Childhood Development Center since June 2017. But she impacts more than the young children at the development center; many of her employees at the CDC are young women who are directly impacted by Acosta-Rogers’ concern for their welfare and futures.

Bette Larsen hosted benefit golf tournaments for over 25 years for charitable causes. The most noteworthy benefit golf tournament was The Chuck Benton Annual Golf Tournament which assisted Chuck in providing the necessary medical care and disability services after he was involved in a horrific auto accident which left him a quadriplegic.

I am a photographer that specializes in 1800’s tintypes. I work in the process of creating lasting tintypes and ambrotypes that will last for hundreds of years! The art of tintypes dates back to the mid-early 1800’s and is a form of photography that is very tactile. My chemical recipes are the same as what they used back in history, and I create a unique, one-of-a-kind heirloom photo that will last forever. I am the only one offering this in my area, and so far, people are absolutely amazed at the process, and it is truly magical!

Nevada State Museum in Carson City hosts its Family Fun Saturday with a focus this Saturday on Nevada Wildflowers.

The Capital City Community Band will present a “You Asked For It Concert” on Sunday, May 21, 2023, 2 p.m. at the Legislative Mall on the Capitol Grounds.

A tradition since 1988, Carson High Safe Grad was started by the community following a series of alcohol-related graduation night incidents and deaths. Safe Grad is an all-night graduation party held at the Carson City Community Center celebrating students completing their education while also preventing the use of alcohol and drugs, including drunk driving.

Kids & Horses is excited to be hosting our 10th annual fundraiser golf tournament at the beautiful Incline Village Championship Course on June 5th. For the last several years, the Carson City Aquatic Center has had its fair share of staffing shortages, especially for lifeguards, in what is a nationwide trend.

The Carson City School District took time at the School Board meeting Tuesday night to recognize 22 individuals with the “Distinguished Student Award.” The student winners were selected by administrators and recognized from their respective schools as having specific qualities, skills and characteristics that distinguished them.

A 40-year-old woman was arrested Monday for suspicion of domestic battery and simple battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

UPDATE 8:13AM: With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, Richard Coen has been safely located in Redwood City, Calif. Richard was taken to an area hospital to be reunited with his family.

As Senate Bill 80 (SB80), the education measure advocating for head injury and concussion legislation, advances through the legislative process, Youth Legislator Stella Thornton, 18-year-old senior at Carson High School, on behalf of the Nevada Youth Legislature, took time last Thursday, May 4, 2023, to further present SB80 to the Nevada Assembly Committee on Education.

For the first time in Carson City, the nationally recognized nonprofit Green Our Planet will host a student-run farmers market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nevada Capitol Building on Tuesday, May 16. The Carson High School (CHS) Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit has received a perfect score of 5 during their recent inspection. Conducted by Captain Shane Tanner, commanding officer at Naval Air Station Fallon, the inspection evaluated the unit’s appearance and performance in several areas including Color Guard and Drill Demonstration.

The community is invited to Mills Park from 10:00am – 2:00pm on Saturday, May 20, 2023 for the 5th annual Kids to Parks Day event here in Carson City. The celebration will include music, food, outdoor activities from local organizations, educational booths, the Junior Park Ranger Olympics, and Junior Park Ranger Bike Races.

Carson City is seeking an artist or artist team to design, fabricate and install a free-standing, outdoor, original sculpture at the South Carson Street/South Stewart Street Roundabout. Carson City recently completed the South Carson Complete Streets Project, the largest corridor revitalization project in the City’s history. One of the focal points of the corridor revitalization is the roundabout at South Carson Street and South Stewart Street.
