On October 28th the Readers Theater Small Group of the First United Methodist Church will present Oscar Wilde’s play “The Importance of Being Earnest” at 7:00 p.m.

The play originally opened in London on Valentine’s Day, 1895 to rave reviews, which have continued to this day. A comedy, it is a sharp commentary on upper class British society, of which Wilde himself was a member. Here he criticizes (satirizes or mocks) the institution of marriage, as well as love, for its emphasis on appearance instead of substance.

Why all the fuss about Nevada's birthday on October 31? The battle lines were drawn between "traditionalists", and the "grinches" who would steal Nevada Day by calling for the last Friday of October to be the state's official holiday. The parade and other festivities would follow on Saturday; thus making for a three-day weekend for some Nevadans as well as state and local government employees. With the passage of AB396 by the 1997 legislature, Nevada voters, on November 3, 1998 advised the 1999 legislature they wanted to celebrate Nevada Day on the last Friday in October beginning in 2000. The legislature, after much heated debate, complied.

CARSON CITY – The September jobs report released today contained some hints of economic life in recession-battered Nevada, even though the unemployment rate held steady at a double-digit 13.4 percent rate from August.
While still tops in the nation in unemployment, Nevada saw a decline in the jobless rate in the Las Vegas area, to 13.6 percent from 14.3 percent in August. The Reno-Sparks and Carson City areas also saw declines.

Last evening at approximately 9:48 pm, a law enforcement officer assigned to Department of Public Safety-Investigation Division observed a moving violation by the driver of a silver Chevrolet 4-door sedan on US 395 in Pleasant Valley. The officer was not wearing a uniform and was driving an unmarked police vehicle. He requested assistance from a trooper and provided our DPS-Communications Center with the information which included the Nevada license plate displayed on the sedan. The dispatcher informed him that the vehicle was recently reported stolen. There were four occupants riding in the vehicle. The officer and several other troopers initiated a felony traffic stop on US 395 just south of Lakeview Hill on the north side of Carson City. All four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle, placed into handcuffs and detained.
