The Occupy Carson City rally has begun in front of the Nevada Legislature on Carson Street. The event is being held in conjunction with Occupy events in nearly 951 cities in 82 different countries, inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York.

At least 70 people have gathered today for Occupy Carson City. The rally is in front of the Nevada State Legislature and will last through 1 p.m. Today's gathering is a part of a larger Global Day of Protest for the entire movement, designed to communicate the message that 99 percent of Americans are unified in their demand for government policies and laws to that benefit citizens instead of corporations.
Occupy Carson City is being monitored by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The movie "The Thing," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is labeled by its creators as "prequel" to the 1982 film that is rated as a classic sci-fi horror film. Incumbent Rep. Joe Heck's congressional seat would have more Democrats than Republicans and one central Las Vegas congressional district would be almost 43 percent Hispanic, according to maps released by the Nevada District Court today.

The 2nd Congressional District would cover Washoe County and Northern Nevada. That seat, held by Republican Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, would be 35 percent Democratic and 42 percent Republican.

CARSON CITY – The three special masters appointed by Carson City District Judge James Todd Russell to redraw Nevada’s political boundaries wasted no time on the charge, filing their report and proposed maps with the court today.

CARSON CITY – Two initiative petitions filed with the Secretary of State’s office that would amend the state constitution to outlaw abortion by declaring that life begins at conception are already facing legal challenges from the ACLU and Planned Parenthood.
The petitions were filed in September by Personhood Nevada and the Nevada Prolife Coalition.

A research project at the University of Nevada, Reno has received a $410,220 grant to explore how video exercise games can be played without using visual feedback so the visually impaired, especially adolescents, can improve their health through increased activity. The funding comes from the human-centered computing program of the National Science Foundation.

On Monday, October 17, Saliman Road will be closed in the southbound direction between Fairview Drive and Colorado Street from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for sealing. One lane of traffic will remain open in the northbound direction.

During the period of Monday, October 17 through Wednesday, October 19, NDOT will be slurry sealing the following roads. Lane closures with flagger control will be in place and minor delays are expected.

  • Snyder Avenue from Bigelow Drive to US 395.
  • Frontage Road from Snyder Avenue to Old Clear Creek Road.

The Northern Nevada premiere of Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic tale of forbidden love, will arrive at the Carson City Community Center during weekends in early November, according to the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The production will appear Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 4 - 20 at 2 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18-22 and may be purchased by phone or in person at the Performing Arts Office of Western Nevada College, 775-445-4249. Parking is free.

Gold's Gym is holding a fundraiser to benefit the victims directly affected by the IHOP tragedy. There are numerous events that we will be doing that day. Among them are: a dunk tank donated by Kemp's Fun Jumpers. The Mayor is going to be in that dunk tank between noon and 1 pm. We have Firkin Fox doing BBQ. There will be a DJ and a popcorn machine. We are holding a "Sponsor A Slacker". That entails people getting sponsored to come to a 45 minute class designed to kick their tails! There is also a "Spin A Thon".
