LAS VEGAS – on Monday, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo announced that the Colorado River Lower Basin States have developed a plan to conserve 3 million acre-feet over the next three years to protect the Colorado River system.

Saturday afternoon I had the time of my life at the Odeon Hall in Dayton, Nevada. I got to present Mark Twain on the very stage where Samuel held forth 157 years ago, away back in 1866. Master Gardener Michael Janik is a fruit tree expert who advises this for fruit trees in May: “Thinning is an essential step in producing larger, tastier fruit and will also help prevent damage from insects. Cherries do not need to be thinned. Apples, pears, peaches and nectarines benefit from thinning. Plums and apricots may also be thinned if there is a heavy crop.”

On Sept. 30 the final evening show with Mark Twain, dedicated to Steven Saylor and the volunteers of The Comstock Foundation for History & Culture will take place at Piper's Opera House.

The 5th annual Kids to Parks Day celebration featured music, food, outdoor activities from local organizations, educational booths, the Junior Park Ranger Olympics, and Junior Park Ranger Bike Races.

Today. Saturday, May 20, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting its annual Cops and Kids Open House event. The event is free for all and takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Several police and fire units from multiple agencies were called to a residence on Wialaki St. and an officer involved shooting has been reported.

The officer is reported to not be injured. One individual is dead.

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) April 2023 economic report, Nevada lost 2,900 jobs over the month.

Employment is up 61,600 jobs since April 2022, an annual increase of 4.2 percent. The total employment level in the state is 1,540,300. The state’s unemployment rate in April is 5.4 percent, decreased by 0.1 percentage point from 5.5 percent in March and increased by 0.2 percentage points when compared to April 2022.

Nevada Sagebrush League Pop Warner and the Pacific Northwest Region Pop Warner issued a joint statement regarding the recent reveal that a cheer coach’s husband is a registered sex offender who was allowed to participate in what Pop Warner calls an “unofficial” capacity.

The joint release stated that an investigation has been opened which will be “thorough, objective and urgent.”

On Monday, May 29 in honor of Memorial Day, the VFW Post #8071 (Virginia City/Dayton/Silver Springs members) will be hosting their Annual Memorial Day Service at the Dayton Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Dayton at 9:00 a.m.

In attempts to mitigate potential impacts from spring runoff, Douglas County has deployed several proactive efforts and messaging ahead of the hazardous conditions expected through May 22.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be biologist Craig Downer, who will explain with specificity why he strongly supports SB90, a bill which designates the wild mustang as the official state horse of the State of Nevada.

The Legislative Counsel’s digest of SB90 states: "Existing law designates numerous state emblems, including, without limitation, a state bird, state insect, state reptile, state animal, state fish and others. This bill designates the wild mustang as the official state horse of the State of Nevada."

As a result of warm temperatures and increased snowmelt throughout the region, the California Nevada River Forecast Center is forecasting the Walker River in Mason Valley and Yerington to rise near moderate flood stage by this Sunday, May 21, 2023.

The community should prepare for high flows to continue on both forks and mainstem of the Walker River for several weeks.

The Lone Mountain Cemetery is getting greener with help from two local Rotary Clubs.

The Rotary Club of Carson City and the Cap City Passport Rotary Club teamed up with the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department on a beautification project at the cemetery.

Carson City School District teachers and administrators from Empire Elementary School were honored by Governor Joe Lombardo and the Governor’s Office of Science Innovation and Technology (OSIT) Tuesday, May 16, 2023, in the Old Assembly Chambers in the Nevada Capitol building.

The ceremony recognized Empire Elementary School for advancing from a “Developing STEM School” to an “Established STEM School.”

Wednesday evening deputies were dispatched to the Carson City Airport on report of a man “running around the airport” inside the secured gates. Upon arrival, deputies learned the man had acquired a golf cart and was driving around in the area.

Carson City's Thursday Nite Cruisers are back for another season of car appreciation, warm weather, and summer vibes.

Each Thursday, join the cruisers throughout Carson City from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for an evening of fun, which includes raffle drawings, a 50/50 at each show, as well as a Best of Show award selected by each hosting business.

Fireworks are returning to South Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July. The popular Lights on the Lake show hosted by the Tahoe Douglas Visitor's Authority will start at 9:45 p.m. The fireworks will be launched off barges on Lake Tahoe near Edgewood Tahoe.

Several Carson City Pop Warner parents and former coaches are calling for the resignation of a cheer coach — and the board president — after the sex offender status of the coach’s husband was revealed, and parents learned the board was well aware but chose not to alert parents.

Happy Wednesday Carson City, and easy hello to Oso!

Oso is a small dog with a big heart and lots of love to give still. He is 10 years old and is blind and deaf, with moderate dental disease. He’s afraid of strangers and other dogs at first, but once he feels safe, he really comes out of his shell. Oso loves it when people sit with him as he eats and loves plushy toys.

He has been in the shelter since late April and loves to play with other dogs his size.

Tonight and next week, elementary schools in the Carson City School District will host Parent Information Nights for “Ready to Rock Kinder,” an information night for parents of all students planning to attend Kindergarten this fall. The parent nights will include information on how to help your child this summer as well as provide some activities, skills and resources to help make practicing for kindergarten fun. Information will be available about summer school as well.

Starting on May 24, 2023, Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City will host its popular Wednesday afternoon Skeet and Sporting Clays leagues.
