Mile High Band Association’s 2023 Jazz & Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for northern Nevada artists, including teachers and students. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover.

With 24 inches of snow on the ground as I write this, it is hard to believe it’s almost time to plant cool season crops. Some, such as kale, go in four weeks to five weeks before the last frost and others, including beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, radishes, rutabagas and turnips can be planted two weeks to three weeks prior.

CARSON CITY — With winter weather conditions continuing, the Nevada State Police and Nevada Department of Transportation remind motorists to plan ahead to stay safe.

This winter, both agencies have been working diligently to keep the motoring public safe by clearing roadways, assisting motorists to safety, and maintaining road closures as necessary.

Motorists should avoid the area or use caution while in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Snow Squall Warning until 5:45 Saturday evening, and advises drivers to slow down or delay travel entirely until the squall has passed.

What is a squall exactly? According to the NWS, snow squalls are intense periods of moderate to heavy snowfall accompanied by surface winds which create whiteout conditions.

Similar to a dust storm, snow squalls are usually short in duration and can be tracked by radar across a region or area.

In a brief respite from the back to back winter storms the Sierra region is experiencing, vino enthusiasts used the opportunity to walk the downtown for the March wine walk.

Just before 11:20 a.m. a crash with injuries was reported in the Northbound lanes of North Carson Street near the Dollar Tree.

The slow lane is currently blocked.

I took a little drive this morning near Genoa and this is one of the views I couldn't resist. The Carson River with Sierra Nevada just east of Genoa.

A few years ago, volunteers installed chicken wire over all the windows at the historic Donovan Mill in Silver City. Fast forward to July 2022 when the Daughters of the American Revolution granted $10,000 for Donovan Mill window restoration and replacement. The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture matched this funding with $10,000.

Carson City Supervisors voted Thursday to deny an application that would allow cannabis locations to expand into northern Carson City.
