A Carson City code enforcement check on property that was to be condemned led to the discovery Wednesday of an underground bunker, marijuana grow operation and the arrest of a 68-year-old man.

UPDATE 3:39PM: The Monarch Fire is approximately 2,500 acres and currently 5 percent contained. No structures are immediately threatened at this time and the fire is believed to be lightning caused from the previous day. Responding agencies include East Fork, Central Lyon, North Lake Tahoe, North Lyon, Story County, Tahoe Douglas and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection Districts, Reno Fire Department, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.

As of 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning, the fire in the Pine Nuts in Douglas County, which has been named the Monarch Fire, now covers a total of 1,794 acres.

Multiple agencies are on scene to try and control the fire which is thought to have been caused by a lightning strike during yesterday’s thunderstorm.

Speed is a major contributing factor to driver, pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic deaths in Nevada. In 2018, there were 92 speeding-related fatalities on Nevada roadways.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting Wednesday, June 24 that there are eight new positive cases and one additional recovery of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 304, with 210 recoveries and seven deaths, 87 cases remain active.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education on Wednesday released guidance to provide flexibility and ensure transparency as Nevada’s school districts and charter schools are developing plans to reopen for the 2020-21 school year.

East Fork Fire Protection District responded Wednesday afternoon to a brush fire off of Pine Nut Road in Douglas County.

Since launching a statewide testing initiative in May, the Nevada Department of Corrections has tested 10,329 offenders for COVID-19, or 83 percent of its total population of 12,368. Of those tested, only nine — or .08 percent of all offenders — have tested positive for the virus, one of the lowest rates in the nation.

A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of two felony counts assault with a deadly weapon and two misdemeanor offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Beginning Friday, June 26, the Carson City Fire Department will implement fire restrictions on City and privately-owned lands within Carson City. Vegetation in western Nevada has dried out significantly. CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be open normal hours on Tuesday, June 23, after a fiber optic cable cut by a private contractor caused outages for the DMV and many other state agencies on June 22.

Central Lyon County Fire Department was called Monday afternoon to a brush fire in Dayton near Townsend Street and Andrea Way. Carson City Fire Department was also called to respond as mutual aid.

A 36-year-old woman was arrested Sunday night in Silver Springs following a vehicle pursuit that began in Mineral County, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

A Public Utilities Commission of Nevada telephonic consumer session will be held Thursday to discuss NV Energy rate reductions for customers.
