Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid spoke to Carson City Democrats today at their county convention at Eagle Valley Middle School.

Nevada's senior senator spent time talking and taking pictures with the attendees before exhorting the partisan crowd to help him in his tough reelection campaign this year.

Reid made a short speech before heading out to speak at other county conventions going on across the state today.

Candidates for Carson City Board of Supervisors, School Board, Assessor and Sheriff were also on hand to speak to the crowd.

RENO – The three Republican candidates vying to become the next governor of Nevada engaged in a spirited discussion Friday on issues ranging from taxes and public education to the future of Yucca Mountain.

In an automated one-question survey of likely Republican voters conducted for the Nevada News Bureau on April 22 by PMI, Inc., U.S. Senate candidate Sue Lowden earned 41 percent of the vote compared to 24 percent for Danny Tarkanian, 17 percent for Sharron Angle and 18 percent who prefer someone else.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) this morning voted to overturn the U.S. Atomic Energy Safety and Licensing Board’s order to suspend the Yucca Mountain administrative hearings.
The NRC has ordered the licensing board to make a decision on the Department of Energy’s (DOE) motion to withdraw the license for Yucca Mountain with prejudice by June 1.

Deputies of the Carson City Sheriff’s Protective Association have endorsed fellow officer Bob Guimont for the city's top elected law enforcement leadership position.

Of the 75 ballots cast, and 60 returned, Guimont racked up 45 votes, or 86.5 percent of the actual votes cast, followed by incumbent sheriff Ken Furlong with four votes and challenger Bob White, a sheriff's office captain, with three votes. Of the returned ballots, five were marked No Candidate and three of the votes were not counted because they were not sealed.

Following this Tuesday’s news that he will represent Nevada on the Colorado River Commission, former state Senator Mark Amodei today decided to throw his hat in the ring for Republican state party chairmanship.
Amodei said he called the party’s Vice Chair, Sherry Dilley, to inform her of his intentions this morning, and that he will soon be formally requesting consideration from the GOP’s credentialing committee.

CARSON CITY – Two of the four Republican candidates seeking to replace Sen. Randolph Townsend in state Senate District 4 in Washoe County attacked one another’s records in a debate televised today on the Nevada NewsMakers program.
Assemblyman Ty Cobb said one of his opponents, Ben Kieckhefer, has called for “revenue enhancements” which Cobb said is support for a tax increase. Kieckhefer denied the charge.

A 47-year-old transient faces assault and disorderly conduct charges after telling Carson City deputies they were going to die and that he was the president.

On Monday at about 12:30 p.m. officers responded to a call about a man who was seen yelling and punching cars near the Carson Nugget. The disturbed man was described as having white hair that stuck straight up and wearing a blue shirt and carrying a black bag.

CARSON CITY — Faced with stiff public opposition, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has withdrawn a proposal to immediately require motorists to get a new type of driver's license. Instead, the Las Vegas Sun reports the DMV will give motorists the option of either continuing with their current licenses or obtaining a license that complies with the federal "Real ID" act. Two Sacramento men face felony burglary charges after they allegedly stole computers earlier this month from Wal-Mart in Carson City, and then returned to the store on Sunday.

Four men were detained after deputies were shown surveillance photos by a Wal-Mart security officer who explained the theft to officers of the computers, valued at $2,694.

After more than a year in the making, the owners of Paradise Cove will open their restaurant on Saturday and stage a grand opening on Monday.

Time to flip a coin and cash in on some Carson City history this week.
Today through Saturday is National Coin Week and the Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club will celebrate the occasion with events culminating on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum.

The 87th annual National Coin Week, will celebrate coin and currency collecting with the theme, “Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks.” The Nevada State Museum and the Reno Coin Club, both members of the American Numismatic Association, have several events lined up for the day.
