During the Board of County Commissioners meeting Thursday, April 6, 2023, Sheriff Brad Pope and County Commissioners recognized Deputy Derek Daniel with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Life Saving Award for taking lifesaving action to administer naloxone, the opioid reversal antidote, on March 8, 2023.

The annual Carson City Aquatic Center’s Underwater Egg Hunt took place Saturday with great attendance.

The fun began at 2 p.m. with each group of pre-registered egg hunters given a 15 minute hunt session in both the big pool and the splash pool.

All prizes were donated by local businesses and pool enthusiasts, including large donations by Carson City Toyota and Roper Heating and Repair.

For the past ten years, the Greenhouse Project has been quietly expanding behind Carson High School while their mission has remained the same: producing food for those who might otherwise lack the access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Even though lawmakers in 2021 unanimously passed AB88, a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Howard Watts (D-Las Vegas) that prohibited “sundown sirens,” or sounds citywide to alert people of color to leave town by a certain time, the town of Minden still sounds a siren at 5 p.m.

The city says the sound honors first responders despite concerns about the racist connotations brought up by Washoe tribal members during the hearing Wednesday for SB391, which seeks to close a loophole in the previous bill that allowed the practice to continue.

Record snow throughout the state is stacking up to be one of the largest snowpack years in California’s recorded history, which could also raise waterways on national forests to unsafe levels. As of April 1, the snow water content for the state is at 241 percent of average, according to a recent survey by the California Department of Water Resources.

A lucky local turned a $10 bet into a $14 million-dollar Megabucks jackpot Sunday night at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. The longtime Atlantis guest, who wished to remain anonymous, played Megabucks Mega Vault for 40 minutes before hitting the biggest slot machine win in Reno history. The official value of the record-setting jackpot was $14,005,833.17.

On second reading Thursday, Carson City supervisors repealed 17.10 Open Space Development, which has been hotly contested in recent years.

The term Open Space is a misnomer; in fact, 17.10 has allowed developers to reap many benefits without actually being required to provide communal space for the public to gather or recreate.

Rosetta (Ballard) McFadden passed away peacefully at home on April 1, 2023, with her daughter at her side. She was 93 years old. She was born on Feb. 28, 1930 in Plains, Kansas to parents John Preston Ballard and Anna Lena (Shinogle) Ballard.

Since Jan. 1, Carson City has received approximately 10 inches of rain, varying slightly by location. The average rainfall for the entire year for Carson City is just under 12 inches. With heavy rainfall and runoff, the soil around a structure’s foundation can become saturated.
