At the Carson City Board of Supervisor meeting going on right now, Office of Business Development Director Joe McCarthy announced that a new Olive Garden restaurant will be going into the Southgate Center on South Carson Street.

Olive Garden has agreed to a land lease, conditioned upon the developer of the shopping center filling the other empty stores. On that point, the new Big Lots store will open next month, and Big 5 Sports will be moving into the other space from their current, smaller location on North Carson Street.

Questionable attack ads and the role of the federal government in job creation were the top issues in an energized debate Wednesday between Rep. Dina Titus and Republican challenger Joe Heck in one of the most closely watched house races of the Nov. 2 general election.

A major drug operation east of Carson City was brought down late Tuesday with 10 arrests, two being juveniles, the Nevada Department of Public Safety reports.

The bust happened at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and involved multiple law enforcement agencies that resulted in the execution of four search warrants and 10 arrests and the confiscation of 1502 grams of drugs, including more than three pounds of methamphetamine.

The weekend is the weekend before Halloween, which around these parts has been come to be known as the “Haunted Weekend”. It started with the Carson City Ghost Walk, which has been a tradition for over a decade, and then the Carson Valley got into the act. There’s now enough going on to keep you busy through the whole weekend. Tours will explore Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa, as well as the Mottsville Cemetery. A debate today among the three candidates for Nevada attorney general focused on a disputed ad discussing a decades old criminal conviction of the Republican seeking the post and allegations of political favoritism by the incumbent, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto.

After spending decades helping so many here in Carson City, Vikki Hopkins finds herself on the receiving end of that help today.

In September 2010 she was diagnosed with an advanced form of lung cancer. Upon hearing about it, her co-workers started spreading the word about her struggle. Almost immediately a movement began to help Vikki and her family with this struggle. The response was immediate and overwhelming.

Yep, there’s a new guy sitting in the corner office of Heavenly admin building on Kingsbury Grade — Pete Sonntag, one-time ski bum turned management of the giant resort at Lake Tahoe.

So maybe the era of ski bums isn’t over. They may not wear suits but they often are the people doing the suits’ job.

With a new boss at Heavenly, onetime ski bum Pete Sonntag, things are humming there as they prepare for the upcoming season. I taught skiing there for several years and with all the new stuff and improvements going on I sometimes wish I were back on the hill there  — even if they never improve the ski school facilities are Boulder Base.

Sonntag is a real skier (and boarder) who was on the Vail demo team, so you can be sure he’ll be out on the hill checking things out himself. 

Democratic state Senator Joyce Woodhouse and Republican challenger Michael Roberson debated the budget, taxes and unjustified political attacks today in a race viewed as critical by both parties for the upcoming 2011 legislative session.
Woodhouse, running for a second term in Clark District 5, said the mailers sent out by the Nevada State Democratic Party attacking Roberson did not come from her campaign or have her review.

The Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning, with a valid permit, now through Nov. 14.

The purpose of the open burn period is to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris, according to Carson City fire officials.

For safety reasons, a burn permit with a valid permit number will be required before burning will be allowed. Permit applications can be obtained at the following Carson CIty fire station locations:
