CARSON CITY – The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is pushing for major changes to the state’s collective bargaining law for public sector employees.

After a comprehensive investigation by detectives from the Reno Police Dept. in conjunction with detectives from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, all four defendants have been charged in the murder of Steven Gale, from the morning of May 9th on California Avenue. In addition they were charged with several other robberies and related crimes in both Carson City and Reno.

CARSON CITY – The Legislature’s two money committees today approved block grant funding for child welfare activities handled by Clark and Washoe counties, but delayed implementation of a proposed “incentive” element of the plan until 2014.
The requirement that a portion of the funds be made available to the two counties only after demonstrating improvement in the delivery of services was a point of contention in Gov. Brian Sandoval’s budget.

RENO — To meet the demands of the marketplace, the University of Nevada, Reno has combined disciplines and added a new major to its roster: computer science and engineering.

“This will make our students more marketable, more well-rounded and more likely to be incorporated and become productive in their new work environments,” Yaakov Varol, chair of the University of Nevada, Reno’s CSE department, said.

On Sunday, May 22nd, at 3:00 p.m., the 12th Annual Ecumenical Choir Festival Concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Avenue in Reno, Nevada. Five choirs from a wide area of Northern California, Reno and Carson City will combine their more-than-50 voices to sing four selections: Thomas Tallis’ poignant “If Ye Love Me”; Henry Purcell’s majestic “O God, Thou Art My God”; Bruce Greer’s lively and rhythmic arrangement of “The Lord Reigns!” and Franz Schubert’s enthusiastic “Sanctus” from the Mass in D.

CARSON CITY — A Republican Hispanic governor will soon decide the fate of a Democratic redistricting plan that has both political parties embroiled in a debate over fairness to Nevada’s Hispanic population.

Reno TV station KRNV Channel 4 reports this afternoon that documents filed in Reno Justice Court show that two of the suspects arrested and charged with an armed robbery Saturday night as part of a string of robberies between Reno and Carson City, have also reportedly admitted to participating in the fatal shooting of a Reno man early Sunday morning. A camp-out demonstration has been set for Monday through Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature in Carson City and is being led by a group of education supporters who favor a tax hike to fund schools.

Carson City and Douglas County paramedics are at the scene of an accident involving a motorcyclist who reportedly spun-out in the westbound lane of Highway 50 this afternoon, about 1 mile east from Spooner Summit. Care Flight was notified but the motorcyclist will be transported by ground ambulance, according to dispatch. The accident was reported at around 12:43 p.m.

The daughter of the motorcyclist, who was apparently following him in a white sedan, told dispatch that her father was conscious and alert but somewhat dazed.

The Carson School District, Carson Middle and Eagle Valley Middle School have decided NOT have any local Carson City business do any of the required uniforms for next year. Instead, they will be done by a company in Reno!

But, if you would like a blank uniform, they hey, you can support Walmart. All the schools in Carson City are wanting the parents and business to support them ... but they will continue to support RENO by sending out money, our tax dollars, to Reno.

What would you do if there was a public health emergency here in Carson City? With an upcoming Mass Dispensing Exercise, Carson City Health and Human Services hopes to take a step towards answering that question.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today asked for a statewide review of cash settlements with former state employees after Controller Kim Wallin uncovered three payments to former Department of Transportation workers that were not approved as required by state law.

Silver Springs children have a new school garden, thanks to a grant received by Healthy Communities Coalition through the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). In a unique partnership, Community Roots, a nonprofit part of The Healthy Communities Coalition, is partnering with SSES and SS Boys and Girls Club to develop and maintain the new garden this spring and summer.

CARSON CITY – Legislators on money committees today approved on a party-line vote a 4.8 percent salary cut to state and higher education employees.
The proposal would include a 2.3 percent cut through furloughs – about six days per year – and a 2.5 percent salary reduction.
Gov. Brian Sandoval had proposed in his budget a 5 percent salary cut to state and higher education workers.

The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery in Washoe Valley is opening for the season Thursday, May 12. The nursery is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 3 pm Thursday through Saturday until Oct. 15, 2011.
The nursery is designed to assist landowners by providing plant material suitable for conservation uses such as, but not limited to, windbreaks, soil erosion control, water conservation, and wildlife habitats.

The Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA), a local sportsmen’s club for hunters and fishermen will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, May 17 in the conference room at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 911 East Musser Street at 6:30 p.m.
