After a two-year hiatus the Nevada Governor's Conference on Tourism will return in December, state officials announced Thursday.
The conference will take place Dec. 7-8 at the Peppermill Resort Casino in Reno. It will focus mainly on current travel trends, who is vacationing and ways to lure travelers and vacationers to Nevada.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons said today the political pundits and pollsters may be in for a surprise when the votes are counted in the GOP governor’s race on primary election day June 8.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host the Nevada State DARE Officer Conference June 8-9. It is the second time Carson City has been selected to host the annual event, which brings DARE officers together from around the state to discuss programs, curriculum and prevention issues.
There will be around 35 officers who will attend the Carson City event.

CARSON CITY – A proposal to simplify, broaden and stabilize Nevada’s tax base by expanding and reducing the sales tax to include services from haircuts to legal advice is generating some support and plenty of questions from lawmakers and interest groups.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons has announced his initiative petition to amend state law to subject public employee union negotiations to Nevada’s open meeting law has passed a legal challenge period, allowing the signature gathering process to begin.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors agreed to move forward with planning for the Carson City Center Project, AKA Nugget Project, allocating $75,000 to the effort.

The vote was 4-1, with Pete Livermore casting the no vote.

The agreement gives P3 Development the funds to come up with a plan over the next 90 days to see if the project is feasible, and what the final outcome would look like. The trust that owns the Carson Nugget is throwing in $75,000, with another $16,000 coming from the Carson City Library.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad opened its 2010 season with completely booked train rides over Memorial Day weekend. As if channeling the “Little Engine that Could,” the historic railway started right where it left off last year with overwhelming public support. After a sold-out season in 2009, the V&T has expanded operations to Friday through Sunday rides, now through Oct. 31.
The strong beginning to the V&T’s summer operations has tourism officials hopeful the trend sticks.

A ground-breaking celebration was held this morning to mark the beginning of one of the truly bright spots in Carson City's otherwise ailing construction economy.
Building will begin June 14 on a $3.6 million, 42-unit senior apartment complex in Carson City, designed to help close the gap in a shortage of affordable retirement housing here.

One woman was taken to the hospital via CareFlight this morning after a head-on collision near the intersection of Silver Sage and Raven Circle.

Traffic was stopped on Silver Sage to allow the helicopter to land. Witnesses reported that two children riding in the vehicle with the woman were transported by ambulance, but they were not certain if they were injured or not.

A Carson City man faces felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly stealing a Jeep Cherokee and switching license plates.
Scott Michael Tyzbir, 49, faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a hypodermic needle and possessing drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $27,264.

A 23-year-old transient was arrested Sunday after failing to register as a two-tiered sex offender.
Levi Whitehead, with no known fixed Carson City address given, is being held on $7,500 bail in Carson City Jail. According to the arrest report, the last known address for the man was in the 3800 block of Ponderosa Drive in Carson City. The man told authorities he has been sleeping on couches of friends between Reno and Carson City.

A Carson City couple face criminal charges of child endangerment after authorities found a baby crawling around in an apartment filled with trash, moldy food, pet and chinchilla excrement.
Katherine Denise Martin, 20 and Grant Austin, 21, each faces gross misdemeanor child neglect and endangerment charges after Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies made the May 28 discovery at the College Parkway apartment. Bail has been set at $2,500 each.
