Six people have been arrested and more are being sought after 30 gun shots were fired in what appears to be a gang-related shooting between rivals this morning at a Carson City apartment complex off of Menlo Drive near Lompa Lane.

The city's new Business Resource and Innovation Center is now open for business.

Located across Proctor Street from City Hall, the center brings together the building, planning, business license and business development departments under one roof for the first time. The center also makes resources from the Carson City Library available for those who need to do research for starting or expanding their businesses.

A small brush fire near the Comstock RV Park in south Carson City has reportedly been extinguished as of about 6:10 this evening.
Carson City fire crews responded to the brush fire north of the RV park near Highway 395 and in the vicinity of Spooner Junction.
The call came into dispatch at about 5:55. Responding engines from Douglas County were called back as Carson City fire crews doused the small fire.
Fire engines that responded to the fire are now returning to their command posts, according to dispatch.

CARSON CITY – Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce President Matt Crosson said Thursday the Nevada business community will not accept tax increases in the upcoming 2011 legislative session without “meaningful� reforms in a number of areas including taxes, education and public employee benefits.

Reno artist Erik Holland, who has created 22 paintings of Austin, Nev., historic buildings, is being honored at the Nevada Historical Society with a show and opening reception on Friday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Changing Gallery at the Nevada Historical Society Building across from the Fleishman Planetarium at the back of UNR Campus in Reno.

The Carson Valley region, which includes Carson City, and the Stateline casino corridor at South Shore Lake Tahoe were the only two regions in Nevada that saw an increase rather than a decrease in gaming revenue for the month of June, the state's gaming control board reported today.
The casinos in the Carson City and Carson Valley area climbed by 5.1 percent over the fiscal year for June, followed by the Tahoe casinos, which jumped to 13.5 percent.

A Carson City man faces a gross misdemeanor domestic battery charge after he allegedly urinated and spit on his living room floor and then punched his girlfriend in the chest.

The 31-year-old unemployed man was booked on suspicion of second offense domestic battery and was jailed on $5,000 bail.

According to the arrest narrative, deputies were dispatched to the 2000 block of Hawaii Circle in reference to a report of a domestic battery.

Great Carson City jazz music continues with Sample of Soul at Canyon Creek Grill on the patio. The V&T Railroad is back to business as usual with full operations to run as scheduled this weekend, officials said today.
On Sunday one of the railroad's engines derailed. The V&T has other engines available for weekend operations, if needed, including the 90-ton Engine No. 18.

CARSON CITY – If there is one thing near and dear to the hearts of many Nevadans, it is the pronunciation of the name of their state.
For most Nevadans, it is pronounced Ne-vaaa-da. The middle syllable rhymes with glad. It is not pronounced Ne-vah-da. And many Nevadans don’t mind letting people know when they err.

Sam Santillo will not be principal at Carson Middle School this year, after his arrest for DUI, and is "voluntarily being re-assigned to complete a variety of administrative tasks for the district,” according to a press release sent out by the Carson City School District.

The Nevada Appeal has the story about his job change. And here is our story and discussion about his DUI arrest, that also included driving with an open container and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Patricia Potter, former Carson City educator and former chair of the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Board of Trustees, died at her Carson City home at 4:40 a.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2010. She was 80.

"I was saddened to learn of Pat's passing," said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"She was a good teacher and a good friend to many Nevadans," Reid added.

"Pat was a strong advocate for change and fought for a better Nevada as chair of the Carson City Democratic Central Committee. My thoughts go out to Pat's family and friends during this difficult time," Reid stated.

Memories from the past and enthusiasm for the coming season will be topics of conversation on Saturday night, Aug. 14, when the Carson High School Football Boosters Club holds its annual Kickoff Dinner, hosted by Mo & Sluggo's in Carson City.

While the Carson City area was spared the brunt of significant rainfall on Sunday, other places such as Lake Tahoe and Virginia City were not. Heavy rain and quarter-size hail pummeled parts of South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay on Sunday afternoon as the National Weather Service tracked a large thunderstorm in the area issuing a severe weather warning around 4 p.m. and advising boaters to get off the lake.
   

The Jazz! Carson City 2010 music festival opens this Sunday afternoon, with three concerts at the Legislative Plaza/Capitol Amphitheater. Admission is free, and parking at the garage on Stewart and Fifth Streets also is free. Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy the music!

The STRAZZ ensemble, directed by Sue Jesch, will get your toes tapping with an hour of jazz and fiddle tunes played by a dozen of northern Nevada's top strings students beginning at 4 p.m.
