Some Carson City firefighters traded in their fireman hats for Santa caps today to help out area children in need. The Carson City Firefighters Association went on a shopping spree at Walmart to buy toys for the Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday appointed John Wagnon of Vail Resorts and Herb Santos, Jr. to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. The terms are effective immediately.

Wagnon, a 40-year veteran of the snowsports industry, is senior director of brand marketing for Vail Resorts, Inc at Heavenly Mountain Resort south shore Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

He has served on the on the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Ski Lake Tahoe and the California Travel Industry Association boards. Wagnon is also a trustee and past chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board.

String players of all ages and levels are invited to join the fifth annual Christmas Carol Playalong on Friday, Dec. 21, 10 a.m., inside the Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street. The event is free and open to the public.

The Christmas Carol Playalong is hosted by Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players, the Carson City Symphony Association's string ensemble for adult beginning and returning musicians directed by Sue Jesch. It includes violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp players who meet Thursday mornings, September to June.

A drop in temperatures and a cold front pushing through the region means snow accumulations for Carson City into Tuesday morning, prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Winter Weather Advisory.

Snow will develop overnight with the heaviest expected to arrive between 4 and 8 a.m. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible in Carson City with the locally higher amounts above 5,000 feet that will likely impact the drive up Spooner Summit to Lake Tahoe.

A Western saddle handcrafted by Reno residents in 1945 was sent as a special gift to Admiral William Halsey to mark the surrender of Japanese forces in World War II. The Halsey Saddle arrives Thursday from the U.S. Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, MD, on a three-year loan. Gov. Brian Sandoval is scheduled to take delivery. The saddle that gained international attention during the war will be housed at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City in honor of the state’s 150th birthday coming up in 2014 and will tour the state.
