I wanted nothing to do with Western Nevada College’s Always Lost: A Meditation on War project when English professor Marilee Swirczek presented the idea in 2009 of personalizing the Iraq/Afghanistan Wars through literary work, combat photos, and a wall displaying the faces of U.S. military war dead since Sept. 11, 2001.

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and repair report for the week of Dec. 24-30. A sidewalk project will continue on Silver Sage Drive in the between Sonoma Street and Stafford Way. The work will primarily be on the side of the road, but minor delays are possible.

On Monday, Dec. 24, sidewalk maintenance will continue at the intersection of Carson Street and College Parkway. Traffic control will be in effect and minor delays are possible.

A woman died Friday and two were injured in a vehicle accident east of Joy Lake Road on State Route 431, Mount Rose Highway, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The accident happened shortly before 2 p.m. and closed the highway for more than an hour. The woman's name has not been released pending notification of family members.

A Carson City couple face multiple felony burglary charges after authorities found thousands of stolen items valued more than $300,000 inside their home. The discovery, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, is likely the largest burglary ring foiled in at least 10 years.

With Christmas and New Years Day each falling on a Tuesday this year, most families may be planning one or both holidays into a four-day event and traveling out of the area or staying near home and celebrating locally. Long holiday weekends generally means more motorists traveling on our state’s roadways thus increasing the calls for service for our agency. Please assist us with our highway safety efforts this holiday season by always driving with safety in mind first, being courteous to others motorists, and never drink and drive.

Nevada’s unemployment rate dropped to 10.8 percent in November, the lowest it’s been in more than three years.
Carson City’s rate declined from 10.7 percent in October to 10.3 percent in November.
