Interviews are under way to begin hiring the staff needed to implement the $10 million Race to the Top grant in the Carson City School District, the school board was told Tuesday.

UPDATE: 3:50PM: A motorcycle rider on a dirt bike was injured in a crash north of C-Hill in the Voltaire Canyon area. A Care Flight air ambulance was dispatched and landed near the site of the accident.

The injured 52-year-old rider told Carson City dispatch and a deputy who arrived at the scene that he was suffering from back pain, possible lung injuries and was having difficulty breathing. The accident happened at about 3 p.m.

UPDATE 5:45PM: Carson City fire and ambulance personnel responded to an accident Wednesday afternoon where a 14-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle. His injuries appear to be non-life threatening, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. at the roundabout located at 5th and Fairview, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. Care Flight transported the teen to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

The local office of United Blood Services has challenged the Carson City Chamber to bring in 30 blood donors over the next two weeks beginning March 18 and ending March 30.

To kick off the event, Mayor Robert Crowell, Sheriff Kenny Furlong, District Attorney Neil Rombardo and Fire Chief Stacey Giomi will be the first to give blood at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18.

Want a front row seat to the universe? Free weekly ‘Star Parties’ take place on most Saturday evenings at the Jack C. Davis Observatory on the Western Nevada College Carson City campus. Guests are encouraged to peer through telescopes at the night sky and visit with observatory volunteers, who are happy to answer questions.

On many evenings, slide lectures are offered by Michael Thomas, on a wide variety of astronomy-related topics. Doors open at 6 p.m., and lectures begin at 6:30 p.m.

Gas prices across Nevada continue to rise in March, but relief is on the horizon. The average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.83 a gallon, according to the AAA Nevada monthly gas survey released on Tuesday. It was an increase of 29 cents since February.

A 20-year-old former gang associate, who said he has turned his life around, was sentenced Monday to probation, and ordered to stay away from his former associates, as well as juveniles under 16 unless they are immediate family members.
