UNR spring commencement awards bachelor, advanced degrees to class of 2013

The years of hard work and sleepless nights of studying are finally paying off for the hundreds of University of Nevada graduates who took the stage on Friday and Saturday and will now begin the next phase of their lives.

More than 1,600 bachelor degrees and more than 560 advanced-degree certificates were awarded for this spring commencement. University officials say, there were so many undergraduates this year, they had to split the ceremony into two parts.

Just whom is Jacks Valley named after?

The origins of the names of many places in Nevada are shrouded in mystery and myth. Jacks Valley, a small valley in northwestern Douglas County, is one of those places. Lying at the base of the Carson Range, the valley is near Clear Creek and Carson City.

It extends several miles south and overlooks Carson Valley. Published sources claim the name “Jacks Valley” is associated with Jack Winter, or Jack Redding, or maybe even jackrabbits.

Bill would help children with food allergy attacks at school

A bill that would allow schools to obtain and administer auto-injectable epinephrine in the event of a student having a food allergy attack has cleared committee and is on its way to the General Assembly this week.

While it hasn't gotten a lot of press attention and isn't shrouded in controversy, SB453 is designed to protect children at school if they suffer from a food allergy attack or are stung by a bee and have an allergic reaction.

Carson City community raises money for teen with blood disorder

Carson City Cops and Kids open house lives up to its 'safest party on the street' reputation

With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of May 20-26. Utility work for various projects will occur on several local roads. There will be flagger controlled traffic with minor delays possible at the following locations:

— Fairview Drive from Highway 50 to Edmonds Drive.
— Edmonds Drive from Fairview Drive to Snyder Avenue.
— Carson Street from Washington Street to Hot Springs Road.
— Hot Springs Road from Carson Street to Roop Street.
— Retail Drive from College Parkway to the south end.

Car Show Sunday at Michael Hohl Motors to raise money for Honor Flight program

The organization that sends local World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the monuments built in their honor will hold a car show Sunday in Carson City.

Honor Flight Nevada offers the free car show at Michael Hohl Motors at 3700 South Carson Street in Carson City from 9am to 2pm. It's $25 to get in and includes entry, a t-shirt, lunch and a dash plaque.

College Baseball: WNC Wildcats battle back to make District Finals

Western Nevada College advanced to the Western District baseball tournament championship round by splitting a pair of games on Friday in Sterling, Colo.

The Wildcats dropped into losers’ bracket with a 4-2 defeat to sixth-ranked Cochise, Ariz., on Friday morning but ousted Lamar with a 9-1 afternoon victory.

WNC (43-19) earned another shot at Cochise behind the pitching of Christian Stolo and Evan Parker, as well as a six-run fifth inning.

Senate Commerce, Labor and Energy: One Deadline, 12 Bills and Plenty of Laughs

Inspections include convenience stores, restaurants, take out restaurants, retail grocers, a juvenile detention center kitchen, retail food producers and motels.
