Divers monitoring Lake Tahoe have discovered invasive New Zealand mudsnails in areas off the South Shore, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Tahoe Resource Conservation District announced Thursday. This is the first time the species has been detected in the Tahoe Basin.

For 20 Nevada homebuyers, homeownership became a reality with the Middle-Income Down Payment Assistance program offered since May through Greater Nevada Mortgage, a subsidiary of Greater Nevada Credit Union.

The pilot program, made possible by the Federal Home Loan Bank, offered a small number of financial institutions, including GNCU, up to $1 million to disperse among qualifying middle-income homebuyers. Those eligible could receive $50,000 towards closing costs and down payment assistance on their first home.

Fire crews are still fighting the fire Wednesday on the east side of the Pine Nut Mountains in Smith Valley, Nev. Four Phos-Chek dropping aircraft, a spotter aircraft, two helicopters dropping water and hand crews are all working in very rugged terrain to knock down the lightning-strike caused fire.
