CARSON CITY – A business margin tax initiative petition filed with the Secretary of State’s office won’t see signature gathering efforts start right away because a legal challenge to the proposal is expected, a teachers union official said today.

UPDATE: On Wednesday morning at approximately 6:45 am, parolee absconder Randy Nourse turned himself over to deputies at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Minden Station.
Nourse was previously reported as a fugitive from justice by the State of California, Department of Parole and Probation.
Nourse was safely taken into custody by Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies without incident.
Nourse will remain in the Douglas County Jail pending his extradition back to California.

Western Nevada College pitcher Dylan Baker made history for his Wildcats team Tuesday while his own dream of becoming a professional baseball player came true. The Cleveland Indians selected Baker in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft, making him the highest-ever selection out of WNC.

The unbeaten hurler from Juneau, Alaska, was the 173rd pick of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

CARSON CITY – A proposal seeking to implement a business profits tax in Nevada to support public education will be filed with the Secretary of State’s office on Wednesday.

Supported by the state teachers union and the AFL-CIO, if the groups can collect 72,352 signatures by November 13, the issue of taxes will be dumped squarely in the laps of state lawmakers in 2013.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested the following individuals for felony or gross misdemeanor allegations over the weekend:

  • Salvador Maldonado, 30, a Carson City man, at approximately 11 p.m. Sunday. Maldonado was arrested for discharging a firearm into a structure, as well as the misdemeanor allegations of first-offense DUI, resisting arrest, obstructing and delaying an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, and discharging a firearm within city limits. Bail is set at $23,150 plus administrative assessments.

CARSON CITY – Washoe County Republican and Democratic Party leaders may disagree on who the best choice is for president, but they agree on one point – Washoe is the “battleground” county in the battleground state that is Nevada.

Clark County is expected to go big for Democrats and President Obama, while Nevada’s rural counties are expected to go strong for Mitt Romney. But Washoe County, where Republicans lead in voter registration by 3,700, has gone for both parties in past elections.

Since posting the City Center aka Nugget Project ballot question on Friday, I've had several calls about why the question is advisory.

After all, according to Nevada Revised Statutes 377A.030, the Carson City Board of Supervisors must seek a majority vote of the people to implement the quarter cent sales tax to fund the project. So why is it advisory?

A fire bomber air tanker owned by Minden Air Corp, made a successful emergency landing on its belly today at the Minden-Tahoe Airport in Carson Valley.
