A 48-year-old man who escaped the Nevada Correctional Facility in Carson City months before it was permanently closed was convicted in federal court Thursday of being a felon in possession of a firearm, said U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Christopher Lee Lang, 48, of Grass Valley, Calif. entered a guilty plea before U.S. District Court Judge Morrison C. England, according to a news release.

Dayton Intermediate School was locked down for about 45 minutes because of a chemical scare Thursday.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to a report of suspicious materials at the school.

The May-King Tracks 5K Fun Run and Walk, sponsored by the Carson City Area Wellness Association is on Sunday, May 5. Registration continues Friday, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 to noon at the Carson City Health and Human Services Office, 900 E. Long, Carson City.

As part of National Police Memorial Month, members of various law enforcement agencies came together on Thursday to honor fallen officers.

This was the 16th year of the officers memorial ceremony which pays tribute to the 123 Nevada peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

A research group will use Carson City volunteers to help measure Pluto early Saturday morning at the Jack C. Davis Observatory.

The Research and Education Cooperative Occultation Network, a citizen science research project exploring the outer solar system, is conducing a campaign to measure Pluto just before 1:30 a.m.

A Carson City jail inmate faces a felony charge of possessing a dangerous weapon after authorities on Tuesday found pieces of shaped metal in his jail cell.

The metal objects were made from the top of an Ajax can. One was shaped into a key, presumably to get out of handcuffs, and the other was transformed into a thin piece of metal, shaped into a sharp object, presumably to hurt someone.

When money is withdrawn from an IRA but is planned to be repaid to that IRA custodian or a new IRA custodian (so it is not taxable), it is required to be repaid within 60 days of receipt.

IRS Letter Ruling (PLR) is not supposed to be relied upon by other taxpayers, but it does give some information and guidance about what IRS will do.

Let’s call her Ann, withdrew funds from her IRA on Dec. 22, 2011. In January 2012, she contacted a financial institution asking how to roll over the distribution to an account there. They emailed her instructions on how to do the non taxable roll over.

UPDATE 11:40AM: A semi truck overturned on the northbound ramp of the Carson City Freeway, I-580 at Highway 50, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The accident was reported to NHP at 8:27 a.m. and the driver of the truck wasn't hurt.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2006 GMC vehicle hauler was hauling a 2003 Kaufa vehicle trailer with two vehicles on board, said NHP Trooper Barbara Stapleton.
