Labor Day weekend, Friday Aug. 30 through Monday Sept. 2, is just around the corner and for many it will be the last big outdoor adventure of 2013. So, where to go on that weekend?

Well, be advised that no matter where you go (unless it is to some God forsaken location in the middle of nowhere), you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.

Carson City courthouse staff heeded to a fire alarm Wednesday, leaving the Musser Street building after light smoke from lint in a laundry facility triggered an alarm at around 4:32 p.m., fire officials report.

The jail was not evacuated because there wasn't a fire, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. Courthouse staff evacuated the building because there was a fire alarm, but no evacuation was ordered, said Giomi. City workers returned to the building at around 4:45 p.m.

The Carson City Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheerleading program is hosting its annual Friday Night Lights fundraiser this Friday, August 16, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Governor’s Field in Carson City.

The fundraising event benefits Carson City Pop Warner to cover its costs for travel to competitions.

Friday Night Lights will feature a scrimmage football game, family fun activities, game booths, vendors, and food.

Admission wristbands are available for purchase in advance for $5. They can also be purchased at the gate for slightly more.

As the only full service cultural arts council in the region, the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City provides programs, including performances, exhibit opportunities, art retail services, and cable access television productions. The BAC supports artists, arts organizations and community audiences, providing services across a four county region including Carson, Story, Douglas and Lyon.

The BAC campus is housed on two city blocks and hosts two performance spaces, a community ballroom, three arts classrooms, a gallery, Artisans Store, cafe and media center.

Nevadans are recycling more, according to a report released Wednesday by state environmental officials.
In 2012, the recycling rate was 28.8 percent, surpassing the state's goal of 25 percent, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. In 2012, Carson City had a recycling rate of 24.9 percent.

In 1991 legislation known as AB320 set a goal that at least 25 percent of municipal solid waste would be recycled in counties that have a population of greater than 45,000.

A 37-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday and faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery after allegedly being in a physical altercation with her mother.

According to the arrest report, Carson City sheriff's patrol officers were dispatched at 10:15 p.m. Aug. 13 to the 1900 block of Carson Street for a domestic battery call. Officers arrived and spoke with the mother who told officers she feared her daughter was using meth and went out looking for her. The victim told officers she found her daughter near a casino.

Thomas was a retired high-tech industrialist who served on the Carson City School Board, Nevada Welfare Board and Carson City Airport Authority and was a state Assemblyman. He also wrote a column for the Nevada Appeal.)

The word last leaves a bad taste in my mouth. One exception is after an intense workout our aerobics instructor says, “This is the last exercise before we stretch and leave for the day.”

After its doors were closed for several weeks, Foodies Bystro at the Brewery Art Center is now back open for business.
