A Dense Smoke Advisory has been lifted, at least for now, for the Carson City region, but continues in the Sierra for Alpine County south of Markleeville and Mono County north of Mammoth Lakes, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

By 2012, the number grew closer to one in four as Nevada catapulted to third place nationwide for its rate of uninsured people, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Only Texas and Louisiana were worse.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of Sept. 2-8. Beginning September 3, the following roads may be temporarily closed due to repaving:

Roland Street between Bigelow Drive and Ponderosa Drive.
Bigelow Drive between Roland Street and Appion Way.
Center Drive south of Roland Street.
Silver Sage Drive between Roland Street and Snyder Avenue.
The Silver Sage Drive cul-de-sac south of the freeway alignment.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval issued an executive order this week that directs all state agencies to make a concerted effort to include persons with disabilities in the preliminary and final group of candidates considered for employment.

The executive order is intended to allow people with disabilities greater opportunity to enter the workplace and to lead the way for businesses and other organizations to do the same, according to a news release from the governor's office.

The Interfaith Community of Carson City has canceled its annual potluck picnic and food drive scheduled for Monday on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The cancelation is due to unhealthy smoke.

Even with pockets of blue sky today due to a change in air flow, smoke from the Rim Fire near Yosemite will continue to impact Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County through the weekend.

Dense smoke advisories continue for much of the Carson City region and into the Sierra. Heavier smoke could return Sunday and Monday, however, due to a more southerly flow of air, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The Lodge Assisted Living Community in Carson City will again sponsor the SOLEmates Shoe drive this fall to help provide athletic shoes to local students. The second annual event, which runs through September, benefits students enrolled in the Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento/Children in Transition program.

The grant and donation funded program helps to provide shoes, clothing, hygiene products and school supplies to students who lack a fixed living situation. The program helped nearly 600 students last school year and is expected to help the same number or more this year.

I just thought I would share this with you: For awhile now, I've been seeing this mama and baby deer all around town and they are so precious. I caught them having a snack in front of the Bliss Mansion today so I had to capture a photo of them.
