Discount Tire opened up their first Carson City store this week on South Carson Street.

Manager Allen Ogas said this store is number 814 in the country, with locations in 27 states.

The new business specializes in tires and wheels.

"We strictly do wheels and tires, that's our expertise," Ogas said. "I think the things people will like the most is our customer service, our low prices and our tire selection. We can get almost any tire made."

The Carson City School Board will meet at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. Williams St.

Several items will be on the agenda, including reports from the superintendent, a presentation regarding the American Citizen Essay Contest, a proclamation regarding National Parental Involvement Day, and a presentation of the district's new website.

Several issues about individual students and situations, including permission regarding home-schooled and charter school students to participate in athletics, will also be discussed.

Officers arrested Craig Lawley, 25, an unemployed man from South Lake Tahoe, at 6 p.m. Wednesday for felony possession of heroin and felony possession of prescription notepads. Lawley was also arrested for four alleged misdemeanors - possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and a first-time driving under the influence.

As the holiday season begins, Karen and I are taking time to remember how much our community has come through — the challenges and sadness it has faced, and the grace and strength with which we've responded.

Karen and I enjoy Thanksgiving because it's a time to gather family and friends and take a moment to count our blessings. I invite everyone to look around, see where help is needed and take a moment, too.

Not much Carson City news trapped behind the paywall today. There's this story about the 14th annual Turkey Roundup at Mike's Pharmacy, which collected nearly 800 turkeys to help local families. And there is a scouting report on the Carson-Maogue playoff game tomorrow night that predicts the Senators will win again.

The folks over at Virginia and Truckee Railroad (the V&T) and the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau are giving away a pair of tickets for the Polar Express train that will run on Saturday, Nov 26, at 8:30 p.m. If you're on Facebook, hit the "like" button and write what you would name Santa's 10th reindeer. A winner will be picked on Thursday, Nov. 17 at noon.

DAYTON, NV – Pack 100 of Dayton Nevada collected several hundred pounds of food for the Dayton Food Pantry during their annual “Scouting for Food” event this last week.
The boys of Pack 100 spent two weeks canvassing the Dayton and Mark Twain neighborhoods going door to door seeking donations with incredible success.

At Western Nevada College, serving Carson City and six rural counties, the number of students is down nearly 25 percent at 4,277, the biggest percentage drop of any of the state's seven universities or colleges. Of these, 2,365 are full-time students, a 19.5 percent drop from a year ago.
