The American Association of University Women, Capital Branch is pleased to announce that Clarissa Muñoz, a student at Carson High, and Annie Sanchez, who attends Dayton High, are the 2013 recipients of AAUW scholarships. Clarissa will graduate in June and plans to attend UNR majoring in pharmaceuticals. Annie will graduate from Dayton High in May and will begin her college at WNC. From there she plans to earn a BS as a nutritionist and then attend medical school.

Beer and Bräts Fundraiser May 17 for Nevada Sharks Softball

The annual Sharks Beer and Bräts fundraiser for Nevada Sharks Fastpitch Softball will be held at the Fuji Park Exhibition Hall in Carson City on May 17 beginning at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $20 with all proceeds going to support the program by keeping the cost down for the families by funding tournament fees, uniforms, equipment and our indoor training facility.

US Navy League Carson City Council Meeting

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its bi-monthly meeting on Thursday, May 15, 2013 at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Hwy 50E, Carson City. The social hour is at 5:30 PM followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM.
The Carson City Council is very proud to announce that our speaker for the May Dinner will be Monica Jaye, Co-host of the Reno Morning News on 780 KKOH. She is also the Public Affairs and Promotions director for KKOH. Monica is a staunch supporter of the Military and Veterans in the Northern Nevada area.

Darryl Littleton brings Comedy Jackpot to Carson City Library on May 22

Carson City Library will present comedian and author Darryl Littleton, Wednesday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m. in the library auditorium. Littleton is the author of “Black Comedians and Black Comedy” and the executive producer of Robert Townsend’s documentary, “Why We Laugh.”

Saturday is 21st Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

The 21st Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place this year on the Saturday before Mother's Day, May 11th. This is the largest one day food drive in the nation, and since it's start has collected over 1.2 billion pounds of food.

All the food collected goes to local organizations that help feed the hungry in our community. This year Advocates to End Domestic Violence, F.I.S.H., and the Ron Wood Center will be participating.

Explore the World at Your Library: New Zealand

The Carson City Library will present Explore New Zealand at Your Library on Thursday, May 9th, at 6:00 p.m. in the library auditorium.

Library staff member Una Gauper recently visited the island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Her journey spanned months of travel and adventure. Her large network of extended family provided expert travel guidance as she experienced the culture and explored the landscape.

Dr. Candice Hansen-Koharecheck of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz., will speak on Friday, May 3. She works on the Cassini mission to Saturn with the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) investigation team, responsible for planning and analyzing icy satellite data. She led the science team for Jet Propulsion Laboratory-Titan Orbiter. Dr. Hansen is also currently the Deputy Principal Investigator for the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The instructor is Dawn Lewellyn of Clearwater Florida, CTRS, WSI, AI, KIT Trainer of My World Therapeutic Recreation Services, LLC.

This month, Thursday, March 28, the Self Help Forms Completion Clinic will begin at 1:30 p.m. This workshop will provide general instructions and assistance regarding the completion of self-help forms for those who are self-represented litigants. A Notary Public will also be available.

The stations pair 14 events from Jesus' last day with a wide variety of artistic media. Our objective is to present the events of Good Friday in ways that engage the imagination of participants and inspire reflection, new understanding, and worship. Carson City Library to host digital bookmobile March 28

The OverDrive Digital Bookmobile National Tour will showcase the free eBook/audiobook download service offered by the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop Street on Thursday, March 28, from noon to 6 p.m.

Readers of all ages will learn how to download eBooks and audiobooks from the library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos. A “gadget gallery” featuring Kindle, iPod touch, Android tablet, NOOK, Sony Reader, Blackberry, Windows Phone, and more will help visitors discover portable devices that are compatible with the library’s download service.

Business Resource Innovation Center Hosts Foundation Center Training

Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City collecting bras for women escaping the sex trade

The Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City has partnered with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Bishop, Calif., to send used and new camisoles, sports bras and bras to Free the Girls, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving women a sustainable income once they have been saved from the sex trade and human trafficking industries in Africa and South America.

Truckee Tomorrow Economic Development Initiative Moves into Next Phase

A group of 50 community leaders recently gathered for a Truckee Tomorrow meeting to discuss economic development strategies. The meeting was facilitated by Ryan Sharp, Director of the Center for Strategic Economic Research (CSER), an economic research and consulting group. CSER is affiliated with SACTO (Sacramento Area Commerce & Trade Organization) a widely respected non-profit and the leading facilitator of economic development for the Sacramento region, of which Truckee Tomorrow is a member.
