SPARKS – The Carson High boys basketball team actually got the tempo it wanted. The problem was it didn't much matter to Manogue. The Miners are known for their offense and three-point shooting but as it has done all season against the Senators, Manogue showed it can play some defense, too.
And the end result was a 65-40 win for Manogue over CHS in the Northern 4A semifinals on Thursday at Spanish Springs. "I said it before Manogue is underrated for their defense," CHS coach Bruce Barnes said. "We just have an awful time running our sets against them."
Carson was able to stay in the game until midway through the second quarter after going on a 6-0 run to turn a 26-14 deficit into just a 26-20 deficit. Andrew Johnson scored on a pass from Brennan Shaffer to complete the run.
But as it has done so often this season, the Miners were able to pull away after teams could stay close for a while as Manogue went on an 11-0 run to end the first half to take a 37-20 halftime lead. "That's kind of what they get you into," Barnes said. "They can score quick."
