Women's History

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce the awards for Nevada Humanities CARES: Emergency Relief Grants for Nevada Humanities and Cultural Organizations. Forty-six cultural and humanities organizations across Nevada received $368,873 in federal CARES Act grants.

This presentation is in honor of Women's History Month and the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Ammendment. Led by Deanna Beachley, this presentation traces the campaign and strategies employed in the Nevada suffrage campaign, especially on the role of the Nevada Equal Franchise Society and the efforts of Anne Martin and others in the last years of the campaign.

One hundred years ago, women in America secured the right to vote in what is potentially the largest victory of women in our country to date.

In commemoration, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation through the National Collaborative for Women's History Sites has offered to gift to Carson City, a Suffrage Centennial Marker commemorating the people, places or things instrumental to women gaining the right to vote in the United States in 1920.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we want to acknowledge local women who have blazed the trail for today’s women continuing to make a difference in a world once dominated by men. It wasn’t so very long ago men dominated the highest non-elected positions in Carson City government.

Chautauquan Cindy Southerland will portray “Annie H. Martin: The First Woman to Head a U.S. Treasury Facility, the Assay Office at Carson City” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 29 at 6:30 pm.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before. Break a leg to the Douglas students performing in ‘Game of Tiaras’ this weekend; the show sounds hilarious, but be warned, it’s not for kids. Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. North Platte, Nebraska is just west of the North Platte and South Platte rivers confluence forming the Platte. North Platte was formed in 1866 with the construction of the continental railroad. In 1941 the population was 12,000.

A couple of weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the women of North Platte heard a troop train with Nebraska National Guard troops would be passing through town. Several of the women decided to bake cookies to give to “our boys” when the train stopped for 10 minutes.

When walking in a mall or driving behind an older person with only the top of their head showing above the seat in their eighties or early nineties, could that person be a hero?

The Microsoft Encarta College Dictionary, 2001, defines a hero, “A conspicuous possessor of other admirable qualities.” I have known Phyllis Lorraine Anker Bendure for 33 years. After every conversation with her, I discover more of her admirable qualities.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — A stunt pilot, Frank Hawks, unknowingly changed the direction of history for half the world’s population on Tuesday, December 28, 1920.

All he did was take a 23-year-old former tomboy who defied normal female behavior for a 10 minute ride in his plane. “By the time I had got two or three hundred feet off the ground, I knew I had to fly,” exclaimed Amelia Mary Earhart.
