On the list, WNC ranks ahead of such major universities as Texas A&M and Florida State. Great Basin College in Elko received a No. 16 ranking.

Northern Nevada Development Authority is excited to host the 2014 Pioneer Awards Dinner recognizing outstanding businesses and individuals throughout the Sierra Region of Northern Nevada on Thursday at the Carson Nugget.

NNDA will recognize Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell as the special honoree and 2014 Pioneer of the Year for the continual difference he makes in Carson City and the Sierra Region. Also attending will be United States Congressman Mark Amodei as a special guest and presenter and John Tyson as our Master of Ceremony.

Saturday, Nov. 8 is a busy day for area crafters. Four arts and craft events are scheduled throughout town. Get a jump on your holiday shopping at the following:

Comstock Mobile Village Craft and Rummage Sale located on College Parkway across from the Carson Airport from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Over 20 vendors will be offering hand-made goods, food, and rummage. Free coffee will help keep you warm.

While the Nevada Day Parade is known for its length along Carson Street and the number of entries from around the state who participate, it wasn't short of stellar floats, high school and military marching bands, and its share of elected leaders and those running for office.

Western Nevada College student veterans Aaron Endel (Active Army, Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Blaine Inman (Active Army, Operation Enduring Freedom) carry a banner for the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" which features the faces and names of U.S. military war dead in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. Starting pitching stood out for the Western Nevada College baseball team in its annual Player World Series on Oct. 15-18 at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. Six of the Wildcats’ eight starting pitchers surrendered two runs or less in the four games of a series won by Team Lichty, 3-1.

“Both coaches did a great job and both rosters competed reasonably well. Overall, it was as lopsided a series as I can remember watching,” said WNC skipper D.J. Whittemore.

Silver Stage High School students received an inside view of the construction trade industry on Friday morning during a Western Nevada College presentation for Careers in Construction Month.

Western Nevada College is looking for student and independent filmmakers to submit their work for possible viewing at the upcoming Carson City International Film Festival. The event is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 5-7, 2015.

To be considered for the competition, filmmakers must submit an original video of up to 90 minutes in length and in DVD format to WNC by Monday, Dec. 1, 2014.

Those interested in watching the partial solar eclipse expected Thursday may do so safely at viewing parties scheduled at Carson High School and Western Nevada College.

“The Players World Series is always the highlight of the fall and will provide one last opportunity to everyone to make their mark on the team and secure their spot on the spring roster or in the starting lineup,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore.

The series is being held at John L. Harvey Field on WNC’s Carson City campus.

The Nevada State Museum celebrates El Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014. Day of the Dead is a multicultural celebration of life through death. In this wholesome family holiday, participants learn to deal with death in a healthy way by celebrating the lives of dear ones that has passed away. The holiday has become very popular in recent years and is celebrated in schools, homes, community centers and museums in all 50 states.

National Earth Science Week highlights the dynamics of geosciences while encouraging communities to explore the beauty of their surrounding environments. In celebration of the event, the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology will host the 17th Annual Earth Science Week Field Trip, Oct. 11 and 12, 2014. The same field trip will be run on each day, so you have two chances to attend.

Carson City government officials on Thursday recognized Western Nevada College’s nationally known humanities exhibition on the costs of war, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Thursday with a proclamation of appreciation and honor.

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, a Vietnam veteran, has called the exhibit “our community’s gift to the nation.”

A proclamation honoring the creators and contributors of “Always Lost” was presented to Western Nevada College President Chester Burton and Professors Emeritus Don Carlson and Marilee Swirczek during the Board of Supervisors meeting.

More than $4.4 million in federal funding will enable Western Nevada College to offer students more services to meet the skilled labor demands of today’s businesses. WNC in Carson City was selected as Nevada’s lead community college in the nation-wide $450 million job-driven training grants, as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program.

Administered by the Department of Labor, Nevada’s four community colleges will receive a total of $9,921,831 from October 1 through September 30, 2018.

Entrepreneurs Assembly and Adams Hub for Innovation are pleased to announce a collaborative partnership to create, educate and encourage entrepreneurs via a comprehensive business start-up training program and mentoring initiative to launch this October in Carson City.

Both organizations are united in their missions to help develop, nurture and strengthen the entrepreneurial community in the greater Carson City area.

I am a fourth generation Nevadan. I have lived in Carson City for thirty-five years, where I raised my two daughters. Both are now college graduates.

I'm a retired emeritus awarded college professor of business and
economics from Western Nevada College, where I taught for almost
thirty years here in Carson City.

I graduated from UNLV with bachelor degrees in Accounting and Political Science, and an MBA in Business and Economics.

CARSON CITY – New Driver Education courses for teens age 15 and older will be offered at Western Nevada College this fall and over the winter break. All courses are $100. Each session includes four days of instruction, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Two courses will meet on the WNC Carson City Campus on Saturdays, Sept. 20-Oct. 18, or Oct. 18-Nov. 15 (no class Nov. 1, Nevada Day Weekend). A winter break class will be offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, Dec. 29, 30, 31 and Jan. 2. The Carson City classes include four hours on a driving simulator.

“Tesla's decision to open a huge battery plant in the Reno area is exciting news and a game changer for all of northern Nevada. I congratulate the Nevada economic development team on landing this high technology company for our area.

I would expect short term issues to affect our region as we absorb such a large addition to our manufacturing community. Labor migration and availability will be a challenge to our existing base.

The Western Nevada College baseball team opens its fall scrimmage season Sunday against Feather River College of Quincy, Calif. The doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. at Peccole Park at the University of Nevada, Reno, the site of six of the Wildcats’ fall games.

D.J. Whittemore, entering his 10th season at the helm of the Wildcats, said the club will take the same approach that it does when the regular season begins in late January.

Nevada's private space industry has been making headlines in recent months as private companies continue to blaze the trail with new partnerships with NASA and other leading private space-based initiatives. But now, Nevada's students are about to be the next in line to take a bold step into the unknown.

New and returning Western Nevada College students were treated to a barbecue lunch Thursday, an annual Carson City event hosted by the Associated Students of Western Nevada College. WNC officials report a significant increase in full-time student enrollment, with more than 4,000 total students registered this semester.

Western Nevada College has named 68 students to the Summer 2014 Dean’s List. To qualify for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least six units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

“Always Lost, A Meditation on War,” the nationally touring humanities exhibition created by WNC students and faculty, opened Monday at the historic Minden Inn, 1594 Esmeralda Ave., and remains through Friday, Sept. 12.

Western Nevada College Professional Skills Program will offer Beginning SolidWorks, Level 1 solid modeling CAD software on Thursday evenings this fall at the Carson City campus. This 3D drafting application is popular across a wide range of industries for engineering design, documentation and simulation.

Experienced professional Bill Perez will lead students through the basics of SolidWorks 2013-2014. Classes meet in a lab setting with a workstation available to each student.

It will meet Thursdays, Oct. 16 – Dec. 18, 7-9:45 p.m. The course fee is $199.

With the August completion of a 180-kW rooftop array at Western Nevada College in Carson City, nonprofit Black Rock Solar has reached the milestone of building five megawatts of solar power capacity across the state of Nevada. The 83 clean energy projects built by Black Rock Solar since its 2007 founding include arrays for schools, hospitals, food banks, homeless shelters and Native American tribes. These arrays have been built at little or no cost to the recipients, but now provide more than $725,000 of combined savings annually on the organizations’ energy bills.
