SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — The public is invited to the monthly breakfast meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties on Thursday, Feb. 8, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center. Each month the private nonprofit convenes for a meeting featuring guest speakers and ongoing planning on issues impacting the region.

Many a romantic tune has been written about the moon: Blue Moon, Dancin’ in the Moonlight, Fly Me to the Moon. Channel the rare blood blue moon eclipse into something creative and enter the ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ Short Film Competition that begins today. Get a beautiful view of the full moon in picturesque Washoe Valley during a guided hike at the state park, just make sure to reserve your spot first. Something sweet is in store today at Baskin Robbins; they are celebrating ‘31’ with $1.50 scoops all day, and with the spring-like weather, ice cream might not be a bad idea.

Come and join us for our weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at 9:00 am in the parking lot opposite Pesti Lane on Medical Parkway.

All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. Water and closed-toe shoes required. This week's edition of It's Your City is about love stories and films, and short films we'd love to see made that are love stories. The Carson City area digital arts community known as Wired Wednesday, in partnership with the Brewery Arts Center, will host an all-new film competition this year in the spirit of Valentine's Day.

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 17: Things to do in Carson City

It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer welcomes Kathy Bly, one of the producers of the Celtic Series held annually at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Playing in the snow probably isn’t an option for this weekend, but Singing in the Rain sure is. The kids of Youth Theater Carson City present a junior adaptation of the musical favorite this weekend and next. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts ‘Young Eagle’ flights every few months at the Carson Airport to give kids 8 – 17 a plane ride to remember. Help out the Dayton Food Bank during their ‘Stuff-a-Cop-Car’ food drive at the Smith’s in Dayton; unexpired non-perishables of all kinds are appreciated. Reno, NV – Pets of the Homeless is sponsoring Galena Veterinary Hospital to participate in this year’s Project Homeless Connect 2018. Dr. Ford along with staff and volunteers from Pets of the Homeless will be offering a basic exam, vaccinations and nail trims to attendees on January 30, 2018 at the Reno Event Center. Pets of the Homeless has sponsored this wellness clinic since 2011. If a pet is ill or injured, the client is referred to Pets of the Homeless to apply for immediate emergency care.

Judith Ames has the hosting duties at this week’s Living the Good Life Jazz Jam. Dance it up at the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes - Jeremy McGuigan serves as guest DJ. The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus brings their winter concert, “BRRRoque Masters” to the Shepherd of the Sierra Church at the south end of town; those under 18 are invited to listen without an admission fee.

RSVP Presents "Reaching For Zero", A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Awareness Brunch. The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion Nevada Room.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting a significant increase of positive flu cases in the region. Overall, Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties have experienced many more cases of influenza this year than the same time last year.

Carson City Yoga officially opens for business this week at its downtown location and offers a full schedule of classes and events to serve yoga enthusiasts at all levels, from beginning to advanced.

Carson City began legal, recreational cannabis sales Monday, at two locations. Rise Dispensary located on the south end of town and Sierra Wellness on the east side opened their doors at 9 a.m. Any customer 21 years of age or older can now legally purchase cannabis products at these Carson City locations.

Rise Dispensary and Sierra Wellness Connection in Carson City are each beginning recreational cannabis sales on New Year's Day.

Recreational marijuana sales are set to begin in Carson City on Jan. 1. There are currently two medical dispensaries in the capital city: Sierra Wellness Connection and RISE.
