For Dean Heller, a 'fresh start' in Senate comes at frenetic pace

WASHINGTON — Nevada Sen. Dean Heller looks at this new year as a fresh start — to the extent that anyone actually can have one in a place like the Senate when you’ve already been hanging around for a year and a half.

“I want it to feel like a fresh start, but it really hasn’t because we have so many issues,” Heller said during an interview this month in his office. “It just doesn’t slow down. So it’s kind of hard to take that deep breath you think you deserve after such a campaign.”

Support Nevada’s Gift to the Nation

I wanted nothing to do with Western Nevada College’s Always Lost: A Meditation on War project when English professor Marilee Swirczek presented the idea in 2009 of personalizing the Iraq/Afghanistan Wars through literary work, combat photos, and a wall displaying the faces of U.S. military war dead since Sept. 11, 2001.

ODE TO THE WELFARE STATE (1949)

DEMOCRAT DIALOG

Father. Must I go to work?
No, my lucky son.
We're living now on Easy Street
On dough from Washington.

We've left it up to Uncle Sam,
So don't get exercised.
Nobody has to give a damn-
We've all been subsidized.

But if Sam treats us so well
And feeds us milk and honey,
Please, daddy, tell me what the hell
They're going to use for money.

Don't worry, bub, that not a hitch
In this here noble plan-
They simply soak the filthy rich
To help the common man.

But, father won't there come a time
When they run out of cash

Economic Forum projects Nevada to see revenue drop by $343 million

CARSON CITY - Unless legislators extend taxes scheduled to expire July 1, state government will operate with $343 million less money in 2014-15 than it is spending during the current two-year budget period.
And even that depends on how the folks in Washington, D.C., handle the federal government's fiscal crisis.

That was the grim but expected news that came out of Friday's meeting of the Economic Forum, the group of five business leaders who by law determine how much tax revenue state government will have to spend during the two-year period that starts in July.

Analysis: Has Nevada gone blue?

Rest easy, Nevada. We’re still a battleground state. At least so say political operatives on both sides of the aisle.
Admittedly, they may have a bit of a vested interest in saying so. Presidential battleground status opens the spigot to tens of millions of advertising dollars.
By the last count compiled by The Washington Post, $54 million was spent on Nevada airwaves to influence the presidential election here this year — that’s about $53 per vote cast here.

Letter: Libraries are so yesterday and offer little community value

Let’s get real about the proposed new library. It will do nothing for downtown development and will not serve the twenty-first century needs of our community. I grew up in Indianapolis, went to college in Cincinnati, and lived and worked in San Diego, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. All have monstrous downtown libraries none of which slowed or prevented the decay of their downtowns. My brother, an activist Cincinnati developer for such
controversial efforts as stadiums and light rail, sees little community value to downtown libraries.

Graham Blog: Fans Continue To Go Too Far

Event Date:
October 13, 2012 (All day)

There is a problem with some American sports fans. We all need to realize that there will be a loser in every game no matter what sport you watch. The loser of course takes more of the spotlight when the games mean a lot more than just a regular season game.

Yesterday, the Saint Louis Cardinals made one of the greatest comebacks in sports' history by beating the Washington Nationals in a decisive, winner-take-all, Game 5. The Nationals got off to a fantastic start by jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Cardinals never gave in, and slowly chipped away at the Nationals’ lead.
