Nevada’s seasonal adjusted unemployment rate went up slightly in March to 9.7 percent, up from 9.6 percent in February, the state's unemployment department reports.

Carson City’s rate dropped slightly from 10.7 percent in February, to 10.6 percent, but continues to have the highest rate of Nevada metro areas. However, Carson City is down considerably from 12.2 percent a year ago.

SafeTALK is a suicide alertness training for everyone. In only a few hours, you will learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide. Expect to leave safeTALK more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.

On Mar. 20, the Senate Committee on Education discussed Senate Bill 164 in order to clarify the definition of bullying and to provide safe and respectful learning environments of Nevada schools.

HAWTHORNE, Nev. — A mortar shell explosion killed at least seven Marines and injured several more during mountain warfare training in Nevada's high desert, prompting the Pentagon to immediately halt the use of the weapons until an investigation can determine their safety, officials said Tuesday.

HAWTHORNE — Seven Marines from a North Carolina unit were killed when a 60mm mortar exploded unexpectedly at a Nevada military depot that's an important training facility for troops headed overseas, a Marine Corps official said.

The Marines immediately issued an indefinite moratorium on firing of all such mortars worldwide until an investigation clears as safe the type of weapon and ammunition in the tragedy.

The two companies joined forces to provide Carrie Henrichsen, a staff attorney with Nevada Legal Services, the service dog through the nonprofit organization Canine Assistants.

Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to seasonally adjusted 9.7 percent in January, which is the 18th straight month the state has seen a decline in the number of people unemployed. Now below Rhode Island, the Silver State is no longer considered the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, a position it had held since February 2010.

The unemployment rate in Carson City is down 1.8 percentage points since last year and stood at 11.2 percent in January 2013.

School police officers in Washoe and Clark Counties could play a more active role in public safety if a Nevada Assembly bill passes this session.

Assembly Bill 103, which was introduced today in the Assembly Committee on Government Affairs, would remove the jurisdiction restrictions placed on school police officers in Washoe and Clark counties, giving them classification as full-fledged police officers. Most of the questions regarding AB 103 came from a proposed repeal of the jurisdiction guidelines in the Nevada Revised Statues.

Dance floors around town are heating up as contestants for ‘Dancing with the Stars’, Carson City Edition, polish their routines. The event takes place Saturday, March 9, 7 p.m. at the Carson High School gymnasium.

Local stars expected to compete include Sheriff Ken Furlong, District Attorney Neil Rombardo, City Supervisor/Adele’s co-owner Karen Abowd, Miss Carson City Vannesa Macias, and several others. They are teamed up with experienced dancers as they vie for the mirror ball trophy.

CARSON CITY — Beginning today, Nevada no longer recognizes Arizona's concealed weapons permits, the Nevada Department of Public Safety announced.

At a Feb. 28 meeting of the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ association, the groups unanimously agreed to end the recognition of concealed weapon permits. According to a news release, the action was taken in accordance with Nevada Revised Statue 202.3689.

The FIRST NV organization, organized the Second Annual Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge was held Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. High school teams from Nevada, California, Oregon, and Utah competed in a full day robotics competition for two seeds to the World Festival Robotics Competition to be held in April.

Yet the mantra for more money, benefits and taxes for education continue just as it has for the last sixty years. If more money will solve the education problem then why hasn't it ever worked in the last sixty years?

The Carson City Library will launch a weeklong grand opening celebration of the new digital technology center, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Located on the second floor of the library annex, above the current Youth Department, the center has been introduced to computer-using patrons over the last several weeks and now the community is invited, according to a news release
