Tahoe Bike Challenge, Car-Free Day a Success

Through late spring snow and cold temperatures, more than 300 people around Lake Tahoe rode in the 2011 Tahoe Bike Challenge, logging over 3,000 commuter bike or pedestrian trips and 10,000 miles of zero-emission travel. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that 1.9 pounds of CO2 is prevented by every bicycle mile traveled.

Statewide gaming revenues for Nevada casinos were down about a half of a percent in April, with a 3 percent decrease for the Carson City area, but up by nearly 15 percent for South Shore Lake Tahoe, the state's Gaming Control board reports this morning.

NHP: One dead in Highway 395 accident in Douglas County

One person died in an accident today three miles south of Gardnerville in Douglas County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

An early investigation into the accident shows that the driver of a 2004 Ford F-150 was pulling a camper trailer and traveling in the southbound lane of Highway 395. For reasons that remain unclear the Ford, occupied by a 73-year-old male from California, drifted into the northbound travel lane and hit a commercial vehicle driven by a Wisconsin resident, said NHP Trooper Daniel Lopez.

Final reminder of Nevada’s 2011 Free Fishing Day

CARSON CITY — This is a final reminder that Saturday, June 11 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2011.
On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and you will not need to have a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp. However, you will need to abide by whatever the rules and regulations are for whatever water(s) you will fish on that special day.

If you would like to fish on June 11, be advised that the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will have planted many thousands of rainbow trout in our Western Nevada waters.

More rain for Carson City as weather system moves into region

A weather system that has been spiraling off the California coast this weekend will bring moderate to heavy rain into Carson City and Western Nevada tonight and early Monday, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

Up to an inch of rain is possible for Carson City, Reno, Douglas County and the Lake Tahoe Basin, with the possibility of minor flooding along small streams and creeks, according to the weather service and CarsonWeather.com.

Highway 50 over Echo Summit tentatively set to re-open today

Weather and conditions permitting, U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit, the main artery into South Lake Tahoe and onto Carson City is tentatively set to re-open early this afternoon, according to Caltrans. The road was closed May 11 to remove and replace a damaged rock wall barrier.

Carson City Board of Supervisors approve sales tax incentives for area businesses

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted to extend sales tax incentives to the Carson Mall, Carson Tahoe Quail Center and to the new events center project planned for the old Kmart building on the north side of town.
