Festivities include the opening day of the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Carson City's Casino Fandango, the planting of American flags on the graves of our fallen veterans at Lone Mountain Cemetery, a weekly open mic night at A to Zen, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club, live music and more.

Explore a new culture at the International Film Festival at the Community Center. The afternoon offers independent documentaries, and this evening brings a renown Mexican Film about the life and times of iconic actor and comedian, Mario Moreno. Take a gander at the newly refreshed Carson City Library during their Grand Re-opening celebration. Start your weekend with some comedy, live music, swing dancing, or karaoke.

If you didn’t want to brave the downpour to drop-off a frozen turkey Thursday, then you are in luck. Another frozen turkey drive runs all day at the Max Casino in Carson City or the Sanchez Meat Co. in Minden. The Carson High Craft Show, a long-time locals’ favorite, begins this evening at 5 p.m.

But here in the capital city, we have Nevada Day to anticipate, as well: a day filled with hot air balloons, parade floats, music, competitions, and plenty of Battle Born fun. While you’re waiting for the three-day weekend, go enjoy Monday. Football, swing dancing, and karaoke are all on the menu.

Please do not attempt to watch it without protective eyewear (sunglasses are not enough.) Head to the WNC Observatory to take a look, or watch it online HERE. This is my favorite time of year in Carson City: blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of summertime activities. The Historic Carson Scavenger Hunt begins today, so head downtown and look for the unique features that make the buildings one of a kind. Mondays are perfect for getting out and starting the week off with some swing dancing with our local club, the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Firkin and Fox is a great place for food and drink, but tonight you can go and sing some songs with karaoke leaders J and M Productions.

If you’re looking for some new hobbies and habits, try swing dancing. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets weekly at El Charro Avita. If you’re looking for more quality time with your family, then Nerdvana’s Family Game Night is a great way to have fun with the kids. Recycling your Christmas tree (sans decorations, of course) is an easy way to get your carbon footprint headed in the right direction.

The weekend was jam-packed with holiday cheer: Silver and Snowflakes, the Holiday Crawl, craft fairs, and the Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. Monday’s offer some fun times, as well, with swing dancing at El Charro’s or karaoke at the Firkin and Fox. Shopping and wine await at 'Ladies Night Out' at the Holiday Inn Express in Minden. It's a benefit for the Family Support Council of Douglas County.

Weather is heating back up, so at least it won’t feel like autumn, just yet. If you want to break out of your routine, try swing dancing. Beginners lessons are taught on Tuesdays at El Charro Avita. If country is more your thing, Carson Lanes offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Jazz and Poetry at Comma Coffee with the Mile High Jazz Band is sure to be a good time.

Car lovers will want to head to the Silver Dollar Car Classic at the Max Casino, known as the Carson Station just a few days ago. The Classic moves to Mills Park for the weekend. If the Mustangs and Broncos you prefer are horses, rather than Fords, you’ll want to grab a ticket to the Bull Riding Competition at the State Fair. Carnival rides, circus performances, and live music will keep everyone entertained. Make sure to catch the shuttle from the Casino Fandango parking garage: parking at Fuji Park is extremely limited. ‘Break a leg’ to the cast of Peter Pan. Youth Theater Carson City opens tonight at the Community Center.
