This time last year, Lake Tahoe made headlines around the world for an embarrassing amount of trash left on the beaches after the Fourth of July festivities. To prevent that from happening again, the community is rolling out a secret weapon: a humorous new campaign that aims to remind folks to take care of the region.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel has a way for parents to get their kids to look up from their screens and take in the real world at Lake Tahoe. The all-suite hotel has long been a family favorite in South Lake Tahoe and this summer’s offer is sure to please the parents. Kids, 17 and under, who turn in their digital device for a minimum of six hours a day will receive a crisp $5 bill. This offer is valid for guests who book their stay through the hotel’s website.

Grocery Outlet has launched its 5th Annual Independence From Hunger Food Drive today to donate food throughout July, traditionally a time when food agencies experience the greatest need, to serve children who are off from school during the summer.

The Carson City Grocery Outlet has teamed up with Dayton Food Pantry and will be collecting donations throughout the entire month of July that will go directly to that partner.

"We are happy to help out the Dayton Food Pantry in any way we can," said Dave Cox, the Carson City store owner-operator.

Summer is here and the need for life saving blood from donors is in big demand. There are two upcoming blood drives in Carson City where donors are encouraged to give.

The first is Tuesday, June 30, from noon to 6:30 p.m. at the Carson Nugget. The event has been dubbed the Carson City Battle of the Badges blood drive, where law enforcement and fire agencies are encouraged to give as well as the general public.

Classic car enthusiasts can get a head start into this weekend's festivities with a Cruise Night tonight at Wyndham Gardens Carson Station, 5 to 8 p.m. at 900 S. Carson Street Carson City.

The Kings Canyon Trailhead opens today after a ceremony thanking all those involved in the undertaking. The Nevada Artists Association has just switched up their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center and has a new summertime theme. The solstice couldn’t come at a better time: we need some long days to get through all the fun stuff Carson City has crammed into one weekend. The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Initial unemployment insurance claims filed in Nevada during the month of may amounted to 10,963, a 12.5 percent decrease compared to a year ago, according to figures released Thursday from Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

We face some big, daunting environmental restoration challenges here at Lake Tahoe. But helping our environment every day can be as simple as riding a bike, walking, or taking transit. And the hundreds of people who participated in the Tahoe Bike Challenge this June, including many of our employees at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, are showing how big of an impact our individual actions can have.
