Students of the Carson Montessori school brought a special holiday treat to a music teacher diagnosed with Parkinson's in the form of a private concert on her lawn.

The Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings Ensemble takes to the stage today for their spring concert, Music is for Life (Goes to the Movies), where you will hear them perform selected scores from our favorite cinema classics like James Bond and the Sound of Music. Teens can learn more about Geology during today’s STEM program at the Carson City Library, and those with a Sewing Certification can join in today’s workshop and walk away with a handy zippered bag.

Mary Rose “Mosey” Vargas Covington passed away on April 2, 2018. Born in Auburn, California in November of 1942, Mosey grew up on a Sierra foothills ranch in Placer County and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. She came to the eastern Sierra Nevada in 1965 where she taught two generations of children and raised her own family.

If you’re looking for a new career, it may be time to head back to school – Carson High School, that is. The Carson City School District is looking to fill a number of positions and is holding a job fair this afternoon. See what the talented students in the Symphony Youth Strings program have been up to at tonight’s "Around the World in Music" concert at the Community Center. A special candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones takes place this evening at Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home. All those who have lost someone are welcome to participate. Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools ensembles, conducted by Laura Gibson and guest conductor Dr. Brian Fox, will present a "Spring Fling" concert on Thursday, April 20, 6:30 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies, but there are rumors of snow flurries. Luckily there are indoor and outdoor activities, no matter what blows our way. At the top of the list for today is Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz at the Brewery Arts Center. Their annual fundraiser is not to be missed.

As the three-day Presidents' Day weekend begins, Carson City has much to offer. Carson Comedy does a double-dose tonight with Rick D’Elia at the Carson Nugget and Craig ‘The Lovemaster’ Shoemaker at the Brewery Arts Center. World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee is like an open mic for dancers. Travel the world with the annual International Film Weekend at the Community Center; it's free and also features local Independent films. Karaoke, live music, dancing and more round out tonight's options.

It’s cold outside, but the nightlife is hot.If you want to take a turn around the dance floor, check out West Coast Swing Dance night at Yaple’s Ballroom. Rumor has it, there’s a storm on the way. Bundle up and do a snow dance if you want a white Christmas. It’s the first day of winter break hours at the Arlington Square Ice Rink; it’s a perfect place for the kids to burn off some holiday energy. Genoa Candy and Coffee invites everyone to enjoy story time tonight.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

Strings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents its 7th annual "This is Not a Christmas Concert" on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.

For many years, Sue Jesch has given her all for string players of all ages. In 2004 she founded Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools program, each year providing free instruction for over a hundred students in violin, viola, cello, and bass, donating much of her time and energy.

Now she needs our help. For the past two years, Sue's friends and students have watched her fight increasing weakness, stiffness, and pain. She was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's (or a Parkinson's-like) disease.

The 13th Annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association, continued Friday night with performances in downtown Carson City.

Friday has arrived and it’s bringing with it a valley full of good times. The sixth annual Hopefest Concert and Fundraiser at Carson Tahoe Hospital kicks off at 5 p.m. Enjoy food trucks, live music with the Waybacks, and more at the free, family friendly event. McFadden Plaza is where you’ll find Jazz and Beyond’s concert with the Jackie Landrum Band, Living the Good Life is serving up a performance by Prey for Son, or take the stage yourself at Carson Lanes’ karaoke. Today’s list is chock-full of options, so keep reading and have a great day.

Carson City Symphony's comprehensive program of free string instruction begins the last week of August, after school, at three locations in Carson City.

Summer is in full blaze out there. Treat yourself to something cold at Dairy Queen; their Miracle Treat Day donates a dollar per Blizzard to the Miracle Children’s Hospitals. See what the talented kids of Strings in the Schools have been up to this summer at their free concert inside the Carson Mall. ‘Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ is an art exhibit from Western Nevada College that has travelled the country.

Thank goodness we are only two months from the first day of summer; spring is such an unpredictable season. Blustery today, rainy tomorrow, the threat of some snow in a few days. Take advantage of a nice day whenever it appears. Bike night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar is one way to do that.

The final event of the Senior Project happens April 18 and Carson High School reserves the entire school day to these momentous, rigorous, relevant, and result driven speeches. The excitement at CHS is intense as these seniors dress for the occasion, dawning everything from professional business attire to scrubs depending on the nature of their projects. Though college and career are just around the corner, a feeling of anticipation, excitement, and soon-to-be graduation flows through the air at CHS.

Carson City Symphony does some great things: one of which is the Strings in the Schools program. Join our talented STRAZZ students tonight at the Community Center as they perform the annual ‘This is not a Christmas Concert’ concert. Sassafras will be filled with some swanky jazz; Judith and Rocky are hosting this week’s jazz jam. Santa has been spotted at Red’s Old 395 and, naughty or nice, little boys and girls will get a photograph to take home. It's a Holiday Treat for al l— a feast of seasonal and holiday entertainment in many styles! The Carson City Symphony presents the 32nd annual Holiday Treat concert on Sunday, Dec. 13, 4 p.m., at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center.

The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

FRIDAY: Jazz and Beyond

The Carson City Symphony's free Strings in the Summer, a six-week program for string players of all ages, begins Monday, June 8, at Carson Mall under the direction of Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch. Three classes are offered each week. Classes meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and each class features at least one new tune.

Happy Mother’s Day, Carson City! Several family friendly events are occurring around town this weekend. Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. A Harmonica and Strings Concert at Empire Elementary School showcases what some of our talented students can do. Get up early and head over to the Carson City Airport if your youngster has any interest in planes: Young Eagles flights are happening today if the weather permits.

On Saturday, May 9, Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools will present a Festival for Harmonicas and Strings at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. The half-day event includes a workshop from 9:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Thursdays get busy in Carson City. You can choose the Legislative Showdown Basketball game at Carson High and watch the battle of the Donkeys vs. Elephants. The WNC Wildcats take on the College of Eastern Utah this afternoon on the baseball field. The monthly Francis Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum features a slide-show and talk about various geothermal features around the world. Or you can enjoy a performance at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center as our talented student string musicians present their Spring Fling concert. Check out the list for even more.
