Carson Montessori students bring holiday concert to home of music teacher with Parkinson’s

Students of the Carson Montessori school brought a special holiday treat to a music teacher diagnosed with Parkinson's in the form of a private concert on her lawn.

The Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings Ensemble takes to the stage today for their spring concert, Music is for Life (Goes to the Movies), where you will hear them perform selected scores from our favorite cinema classics like James Bond and the Sound of Music. Teens can learn more about Geology during today’s STEM program at the Carson City Library, and those with a Sewing Certification can join in today’s workshop and walk away with a handy zippered bag.

Mary Rose “Mosey” Vargas Covington

Mary Rose “Mosey” Vargas Covington passed away on April 2, 2018. Born in Auburn, California in November of 1942, Mosey grew up on a Sierra foothills ranch in Placer County and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. She came to the eastern Sierra Nevada in 1965 where she taught two generations of children and raised her own family.

Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. For many years, Sue Jesch has given her all for string players of all ages. In 2004 she founded Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools program, each year providing free instruction for over a hundred students in violin, viola, cello, and bass, donating much of her time and energy.

Now she needs our help. For the past two years, Sue's friends and students have watched her fight increasing weakness, stiffness, and pain. She was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's (or a Parkinson's-like) disease.

Strings in the Summer 2015: A program for string players of all ages

The Carson City Symphony's free Strings in the Summer, a six-week program for string players of all ages, begins Monday, June 8, at Carson Mall under the direction of Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch. Three classes are offered each week. Classes meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and each class features at least one new tune.

Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. A Harmonica and Strings Concert at Empire Elementary School showcases what some of our talented students can do. Get up early and head over to the Carson City Airport if your youngster has any interest in planes: Young Eagles flights are happening today if the weather permits.

Harmonica and Strings Festival and Free Concert May 9

On Saturday, May 9, Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools will present a Festival for Harmonicas and Strings at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. The half-day event includes a workshop from 9:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The WNC Wildcats take on the College of Eastern Utah this afternoon on the baseball field. The monthly Francis Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum features a slide-show and talk about various geothermal features around the world.
