Welcome to the weekend. Once again Carson Now brings you a list of what’s going on, and I suspect you’ve seen the daily lists Monday-Friday. This little valley is anything but sleepy. This weekend you can find Uncle Funkel playing at the Carson Cigar Company or Celtic traditional/rock fusion band, the Clarke Brothers at the Brewery Arts Center. Annie, Jr. will be at the Bob Boldrick Theater for this weekend only, so make sure to catch the amazing kids from Youth Theater Carson City.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City! The first Saturday is always fun here, the Downtown Business Association hosts their monthly wine walk, rain, snow, or shine; and don't miss the raffle with some great prizes. The Elks Lodge is holding a hoop shoot contest for ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2015), with the winners headed to the District Hoop Shoot in Reno. This is also the last weekend to enjoy a sleigh ride at Sand Harbor; bundle up and enjoy a gorgeous view.

Children's Museum of Northern Nevada gets a visit from Santa Friday, December 12

National UTeach program expansion includes UNR

The National Math and Science Initiative announced Tuesday that five research institutions, including the University of Nevada, Reno, have been selected to join a national network of universities in the expansion of the UTeach science, technology, engineering and math teacher preparation program.

Young students learn computer programming and 3D design at UNR summer camp

The fourth graders worked at the computer screens for hours, fingers dancing over the keyboard and figures on the screen spinning, growing and changing colors. And, their parents were happy. The students weren’t playing games; they were designing and building things like a whistle, buildings, hot air balloon, cars, DNA models, bracelets, airplanes and more, using a 3-D modeling and CAD design program.

July 4 holiday weekend activities lined up for Carson City and surrounding areas

The July 4 holiday weekend has arrived and there are plenty of activities going on today through the weekend around Carson City.

The Nevada Rural Counties RVSP carnival runs through the weekend at Mills Park. Tonight RSVP will host a spectacular fireworks celebration over Carson City to go along with its 22nd annual holiday carnival.

Carson City Library to host Spokes America 2014

Carson City Library will host the 2014 Spokes team Monday as they ride through town. The group of seven students and alumni from Harvard, MIT, and Columbia are biking from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

Spokes America is a bike trip across the United States designed to make STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) accessible to students everywhere. The Spokes team will be at the Carson City Library with plans to run a “Learning Festival” during their June 16 visit.

National Train Day at the Nevada Railroad Museum set for May 10

To commemorate National Train Day the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will operate and offer rides on May 10 aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway's McKeen motor car No. 22.

The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world. In 2012, the Secretary of the Interior granted the No. 22 National Historic Landmark status, which recognizes the McKeen motor car's significance to United States history.

Virginia and Truckee Railroad season begins with annual Mother's Day train to Virginia City

Mothers will be the star passengers Sunday, May 11 on a special edition train ride from Nevada's capital, Carson City to the 1860s boom-era mining town of Virginia City.

Tickets are on sale now for a window seat into Nevada's Old West aboard the historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad. The ride features storytelling, history and lore, shopping, a long stem rose for mom, and brunch opportunities in Virginia City.

Youth get schooled in Nevada agriculture at this week's Capital City Farm Days

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H presents Capital City Farm Days 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., April 17 and 18. There will be 30 presenters teaching elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

Attendees will include public, private and home-schooled students and their families from Carson City, Storey County, Douglas County and Dayton Valley.

UNR professor receives prestigious Science Foundation CAREER award

Chanwoo Park, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, joins a growing group of researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno who have received prestigious and highly competitive National Science Foundation CAREER awards.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award is given to junior faculty at the beginning of their academic careers who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars, placing focus on high-quality research and education activities.

Eagle Valley Middle School Competes in State Science Olympiad

An extra-curricular activity at Eagle Valley Middle School, 11 Carson City students prepared for three months at after school meetings and on their own to compete in the state Science Olympiad held March 8 in Las Vegas. The team is coached by Josh Billings, 8th grade science teacher with assistance from family and teachers.

UNR career program aimed at high school students interested in science, engineering

A STEM Career Investigation Program, hosted this semester by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Raggio Research Center, is offering Washoe County School District sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to observe current scientific and engineering research being conducted at the University and affiliated institutions.

“The idea behind this program is to offer exposure for students to realize careers in many specialized areas of science and engineering,” Jacque Ewing-Taylor, associate director, Raggio Research Center for STEM Education and institutional grants coordinator, said.

WNC Baseball: Karnos, Roque Key Wildcats’ SWAC-Opening Victory

Pitching decided the outcomes of a Scenic West Athletic Conference-opening baseball doubleheader Saturday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Freshman right-hander Max Karnos pitched a four-hit complete game to provide Western Nevada College with a 7-1 victory over Salt Lake in the opener, but the Bruins battled back for a 6-2 win in game two behind the stingy hurling of Jason Jourdan and Eric Carter.

“Salt Lake has a good team. We each won one; that’s about right,” WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said.
