Outdoors with Don Q: Mackinaw fishing with first timers at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 05/22/2012 - 11:29pmSunday, May 20 was a memorable day for two of our friends. The two friends are Stephanie Parker (our neighbor) and her brother George, who was visiting our area from Phoenix, Ariz.
Stephanie is fairly new to Carson City and to our neighborhood, having moved here from Las Vegas, where she lived and worked for many years.
When I first discovered that George would be visiting and that he is an ardent fisherman, I asked Stephanie (who also fishes) if the two of them would like to try Mackinaw (Lake) Trout fishing at Lake Tahoe.
Without hesitation, she said, “You bet. Yes, we would!”

California game wardens arrest three women
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 7:37pmState game wardens arrested three northern California women on Jan. 27 on charges of buying and selling abalone harvested under the authority of a sport fishing license.
In California, it is illegal to buy or sell sport-caught abalone, or any other fish or wildlife, because it leads to the over-harvest of the resource.
There is no commercial abalone harvest from California’s coast.
Outdoors with Don Q: Things you need to know about ice fishing
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 01/24/2012 - 11:03pmWith the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.
And, that ice covering effectively inhibits your opportunity to catch fish…unless you are an ice fisherman.

Cold ice means hot fishing
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 2:00amWinter is one of the best times to catch fish. Just because it's cold doesn't mean it's time to put your fishing gear away. In fact, if you put your gear away now, you might miss some of the best fishing of the year.
Catching bluegill through the ice is a fun thing to do in Utah in the winter.
That's right—those "crazy" people you see standing on the ice at waters across Utah aren't so crazy after all.
They know a layer of cold ice means hot fishing in the water under the ice.
Learning to ski on the cheap
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 12:17pmSki resorts have long battled the problem of bringing first-time skiers back to the slopes. All too often the expense seems to drive them away. So the resorts teamed up to offer first-time lessons on the cheap, and most Lake Tahoe mountain resorts are taking part. Here's Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows take on it all.

Dungeness crab season opens December 15
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 12:06amDungeness crab is back on the menu for holiday feasts as commercial crabbing opens Dec. 15 along most of the Oregon coast.
Fishery managers made the decision today to open the ocean to crabbing along the Oregon coast from the Columbia River to just north of Gold Beach (42°26'00" N. Lat.). The ocean commercial Dungeness crab season in Oregon normally opens Dec. 1, but was delayed this year because crab did not meet minimum pre-season quality testing.
The testing measures the percentage of meat in the crab, by weight.

Explore Hat Creek in Northern California
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 7:53pmBy the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association
As pioneers made their way through the Shasta Cascade Mountain Range, there was a stream some had to cross.
While a couple of pioneers were crossing this stream, one of their hats had fallen off of their head and landed in the water.
Thus, Hat Creek was born, or so goes the old wives tale.
Hat Creek winds its way through the Lassen National Forest and is known as one of the most famous fly fishing streams in Northern California and offers some great spin fishing.
