Reno’s Riverfront Nixon Mansion Reduced to $16.4 Million

RENO, Nev. (Feb. 2, 2015) – Reno’s historic Nixon Mansion, which went on the market last summer for $20.4 million, was reduced to $16.4 million this month. The estate is listed by Chase International and takes its name from its original owner, Nevada Senator George S. Nixon. The prestigious Italian Villa estate was built in 1907 and sits on 2.03 acres on the Truckee River, originally had 33 rooms, and was one of the first residences in Reno to have an elevator.

More trails, terrain open at Northstar, halfpipe slated for Friday

Lake Tahoe's Northstar California will open this winter’s first halfpipe to skiers and riders this coming Friday, Jan. 9, resort officials announced Tuesday.

Located on Pipeline trail and accessible via Vista Express, the halfpipe is a popular and highly-anticipated feature among Northstar’s terrain park users. Its addition allows for a contiguous, uninterrupted terrain park descent from the top of Pinball Park, which currently offers guests access to 46 features, into the Pipeline Park, which hosts the halfpipe.

Carson City's ice skating rink has returned to Arlington Square at the corner of W. Robinson St. and N. Carson St. Opening day will be Friday, Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, with three session times to choose from: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Skate rental is $3 and a skate session is $7 for those over 13 years old and $5 for youth 3-12 years old.

Afterschool Skate Special for Elementary and Middle School Students:
Monday - Thursday 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.: $5 skating includes skates and one hot beverage of choice.

Letter: Should the Ormsby House be operated by computer experts?

To the editor: Read with much interest Mr. John Barrette's Nevada Appeal story about the Ormsby House 15 year rebuilding project. The basic problem seems to be the owners are not hotel industry people. They are computer experts.

RSVP Nevada Day celebration and carnival to celebrate Silver State's 150th birthday

For the 29th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. will sponsor the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park on Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, 2014, RSVP executive director Susan Haas announced Friday.

Earlier this year RSVP went all out over July 4 with a spectacular fireworks display, synchronized to music, to mark Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. For Nevada Day weekend, visitors can expect plenty of games, thrilling carnival rides and entertainment venues.

“We will have a lot more family fun and entertainment than ever before this year,” said Haas.

Windy conditions and showers should keep smoke out of Carson City area

A band of rain showers is moving through northern California and approaching the King Fire Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Some light rain and higher humidity will likely decrease fire activity, meaning much less smoke, if any, will pass east of the Sierra Crest.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Aug. 17

Here is the Carson City area road report for Aug. 11-17. The inside lanes of N. Carson Street between Musser Street and Spear Street will be closed in both directions Monday through Wednesday evenings from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for street work.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will be continuing road work on US 50 from Arrowhead Drive in Carson City to Baldwine Lane in Mound House. There will be single lane closures on weeknights from 1 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the westbound direction and from 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. in the eastbound direction.

Cause Warrior Ride Passes Through Dayton, Northern Nevada

In early morning fog on Sunday, July 20, 2014, a team of six riders began a 70-day long journey across the U.S. to bring awareness and support to today’s wounded warriors and their families. The 2014 Cause Warrior Ride Team will stop in over 70 cities and towns along the route to historic West Point in New York. They arrived in Dayton, NV on Friday, July 25, departing the following morning.

Dayton Valley Days calls for crafters, vendors

The Dayton Valley Days Committee invites crafters, vendors and anyone who wants to reach a large number of people to reserve booth space for the 26th annual street festival held in the heart of historic Old Town Dayton.
Dayton Valley Days is scheduled Sept. 20 and 21 with an expected attendance over 15,000.

Mad Hatter Garden Party with Corky Bennett Trio Aug. 1 at the Nevada Governor's Mansion

The 2014 Jazz and Beyond - Carson City Music Festival will open Friday, August 1 with a "Mad Hatter Garden Party" featuring music by the Corky Bennett Trio in the backyard of the Nevada Governor's Mansion.

The ticketed party features music, finger foods by Carson City Confections, wine, beer, and a raffle. Festivities run from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Army Guard, Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association team up for new partnership

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Army National Guard is set to team up with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and become one of the association's partners for the 2014-2015 academic year, Nevada Guard and
NIAA officials said Thursday. The NIAA is the non-profit organization of secondary schools in Nevada that acts as the governing body of high school athletics and activities.

DiLullo Takes Over as General Manager of Carson Nugget

Since 1954, Carson Nugget has played a pivotal role in the Downtown life of Carson City, and is woven into the tapestry of memories of locals and visitors alike.

While the Adams family has owned the property since 1958, talks are underway between the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation and M1 Gaming for a possible ownership transfer, though nothing is yet confirmed.

Annual Powwow Celebrates Nevada's Rich, Native History

Stewart Indian School in Carson City hosts its annual Father’s Day Powwow, Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, and is one of the sanctioned 150 events celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial – 150 years of statehood. Everyone is invited to experience the beauty and significance of Nevada’s Native American heritage through traditional dance competitions, music and elaborate costumes of this wonderful, rich culture.
