The Desert Research Institute Foundation presents the 31st Nevada Medal honoring world-renowned astronaut and explorer Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan.
Titled “Sea, Earth & Sky: Celebrating the Spirit of Scientific Exploration, Discovery & Innovation,” the special, hour-long program highlights Dr. Sullivan’s remarkable career as an oceanographer, NASA astronaut, and administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days, including the Carson City Fair, Karson Kruzers Run What Cha Brung car show, a fundraiser bike ride, cooking classes, tours at the Nevada State Museum, train rides on Saturday and much more!

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City has a host of activities and programs planned this week that aim to look back at the past, learn about the present and inspire the future.

CARSON CITY — Fifty years after Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took “one giant leap for mankind,” the image of putting a man on the moon remains a source of pride wrapped in awe for most Americans.

The young and young of heart still dream of becoming astronauts and most people 50-plus can tell you where they were and what they were doing that July day in 1969.

While no one can truly know the future, the year 2019 is going to be full of notable anniversaries commemorating events significant to history. Some we celebrate, others we mourn or memorialize. Some are remembered fondly, others with grief.

Here is a look at some of the more profound anniversaries we will observe this year:

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and there will be plenty of ways for the family to enjoy spending time together all weekend long. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. Space exploration buffs won’t want to miss the upcoming presentation of Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas at Western Nevada College.

Compared to the last few weekends, Carson City is downright sleepy. That just makes it much easier to get around town and explore. Northern Nevada Development Authority, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, and Nevada Industry Excellence have partnered again to bring the 2014 Manufacturing in Nevada Conference.

This year’s conference will be held on Oct. 1-2 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks. The event has been expanded to feature an Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles conference with some of the field’s top experts, as well as showcasing exhibit booths both days.

Nevada's private space industry has been making headlines in recent months as private companies continue to blaze the trail with new partnerships with NASA and other leading private space-based initiatives. But now, Nevada's students are about to be the next in line to take a bold step into the unknown.

Three northern Nevada development agencies have partnered to bring the 2014 Manufacturing in Nevada Conference to Sparks, Oct. 1-2. The event will coincide with a Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles conference.

The events are being hosted by the Northern Nevada Development Authority, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, and Nevada Industry Excellence. The conferences feature the field's top experts, as well as showcasing exhibit booths both days.

Presentations by local educators, researchers, students and science enthusiasts on a wide range of subjects including the life and works of Charles Darwin; biological evolution; science education; psychology, philosophy; the contributions and benefits of scientific discovery to humanity and current affairs related to science and technology.
