Outdoors with Don Q: Ready or not, winter is sneaking up on us

This is mid-October and whether or not you are ready, be advised that winter is sneaking up on us.
As one who has lived in Carson City most of my life, I have learned through the years that one day the weather can be gorgeous and then the next day: Bam, the countryside is covered with a deep layer of snow.

And once the snow arrives, it is followed by ice and cold weather, which will normally be with us into the month of March.

Start-Up: 5 Key Ways to Succeed as a Young Entrepreneur

Start-Up! is weekly column on entrepreneurship, start-ups, technology and innovation, powered by the Adams Hub for Innovation.

Every year it seems more and more people are looking into starting their own ventures, escaping from the corporate mindset and driving themselves to do more, be more—and let's not forget—earn more. These pioneers come from all walks of life, but the category that seems to be on the rise, and the one that I fall under, is that of the millennial entrepreneur.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Man jailed on felony possession of heroin

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday in the 200 block of Mary Street on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Venturing on Sierra ice to fish or skate

According to Webster’s Dictionary, “Ice is water frozen solid by cold.” Well, with the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.

A word of warning, however: None of the ice in Western Nevada is considered safe at any time in winter. If you want to ice fish, you're going to have to head into the Sierra or areas of Eastern Nevada where some lakes freeze over and are thick enough to hold people.

2 Elementary kids capture the holiday spirit

Kayden went up to her mom one afternoon in October and stated, "Mom, I want to go the orphanage and donate presents and sing for all the kids." Robyn replied "I don't think that's how it works anymore, a lot of the kids live in foster homes, but I can find out about adopting a family." "That sounds great!" And so she did.

With first winter storm arriving Friday, Nevada officials offer winter driving tips

With the first winter storm of the fall arriving in the Sierra Friday and Saturday, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol offers these winter driving tips to help motorists drive more throughout the upcoming season.

On average, more than 2,000 crashes occur statewide every year due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime

For several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.

We had been invited to be guests at the home of my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, who spend the winter months in Indio, Calif.
If you, too, would like to temporarily escape winter in Carson City for the next couple of months, here is what we did:

Carson City to Lone Pine:

Outdoors with Don Q: Go ice fishing, catch a nice fish and win a trophy

Mark Saturday, Feb. 1 on your calendar to be a contestant in the annual ice fishing tournament at Davis Lake in Plumas County, Calif.

How to get there: Davis Lake is about 80 miles from Carson City by a combination of I-580 and
U.S. 395 north to Hallelujah Junction. At that junction, take California S.R.70 to the west and travel through Chilcoot, Vinton and Beckwourth toward Portola.

Wine Walk, ice skating with Santa Claus on tap today in downtown Carson City

Ice skating for the kids at Arlington Square Ice Rink across from the Carson Nugget and wine stops in downtown Carson City are on tap today.

The Carson City Downtown Business Association says that even though it's chilly outside, you can keep warm by bundling up, putting on a pair of skates or walking along the streets of downtown, where you can shop for holiday gifts (there's several gift shops and shopping opportunities throughout downtown) and sip some fine wine at any number of stops.

Outdoors with Don Q: Some suggestions for 2013 Christmas gifts

With all of the crazy “Black Friday” shopping madness (shootings, knifings, fights, etc.) now behind us, we can begin, once again, to think rationally about ideas for Christmas gifts for that special person(s) in our lives.

So, if you were not part of that frenzied mob scene on the day after Thanksgiving, or if you are still scratching your head about what to get for that person, here are some “Don Q” suggestions for Christmas gifts:

Sheriff's Office: Go slow when driving in the snow and ice

During winter months, traveling on Carson City roadways can be quite a challenge. With the rain and snow come cold weather and black ice. Add to this a combination of limited visibility and you increase your chances for a crash, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

When driving in these conditions, slow down, take your time and be prepared for the unexpected. Don’t rush, drive with courtesy and caution.

Outdoors with Don Q: Don't understand rule No. 2? See rule No. 1

With winter weather creeping around the corner, and with many California waters closed for the year as of November 15, this is an annual reminder for those fishermen who are done fishing for the year.

Many of you prefer not to fish during the winter months or have absolutely no interest in ice fishing, so this article is specifically written for you. (Hmmm, come to think of it, this article is also worth reading by those of you who plan to continue fishing until the weather warms back up, again).

Outdoors with Don Q: What you need to know about ice fishing

With the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:
