Prescribed fire operations to continue at Lake Tahoe in coming weeks

Weather permitting, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District may continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in multiple locations around Lake Tahoe.

Carson City Fire Department investigate smoke inside Highway 50 East RV dealership

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday afternoon to a smoke inside the attic area of an RV dealership and repair shop in the 3600 block of Highway 50 East.

Good day Carson City, it is Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. After snow and wind blew into the capital city Sunday and overnight, we are looking at clearing but breezy skies in time for today's inauguration on the capitol grounds. Today is also the first day of classes for Carson City School District after winter break. As of the time of this writing, no delays have been announced.

What's happening around Carson City on Sunday, Jan. 6

The weather outside may seem frightful, but here in Northern Nevada, storms are usually all the more reason to get out and do things.

If you do go out on the east side of town today, please be aware of the mustang herding operation being conducted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office along East College Parkway late Sunday morning into the afternoon. There may be traffic delays and detours.

What's happening around Carson City on Saturday, Jan. 5

Let's hear it for the first weekend of the new year, because it won't happen again for another 12 months.

The first weekend of 2019 also means the first Saturday of the month, which is the day of the Downtown Business Association Monthly Wine Walk in downtown Carson City, come rain, snow, wind or shine.

That's a good thing, too, because this weekend will likely have all of that.

Nevada Lore Series: Walker Lake's famed sea monster, Cecil the Serpent

Legend tells of a terrifying monster that is supposed to reside in the depths of Walker Lake who has been sighted for centuries. For years, Cecil even had his own float in the Nevada Day Parade.

The legend of Cecil seems to have been first written down in the early-to-mid 1800s, when Nevada was first being explored by white settlers looking to spread out and maybe try their hand at finding gold or homesteading.

Carson City Fire Department to conduct prescribed burns in Vicee Canyon near Timberline

Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 2, the Carson City Fire Department will be conducting wildland fuels reduction prescribed fire operations in Vicee Canyon in the Timberline area. Operations may continue through Jan. 31, 2019 depending on weather.

Carson City man jailed for suspicion of statutory sexual seduction, providing marijuana to minor

A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday morning for suspicion of giving marijuana to a person under 18-years-old, a gross misdemeanor, driving with suspended registration, driving with no insurance, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. After being arrested, he was later booked for statutory sexual seduction, a gross misdemeanor.

Carson City Special Enforcement Team busts drug ring Thursday night

A 27-year-old Carson City woman and a 27-year-old Carson City man were arrested by the Carson City Special Enforcement Team in the 2800 block of Menlo Drive Thursday night on five felony charges for trafficking and selling meth and heroin.

UNR scientists find causes of 'firenado' in deadly northern California Carr Fire

RENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.

The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.
