After snow and wind blew into the capital city Sunday and overnight, we are looking at clearing but breezy skies in time for today's inauguration on the capitol grounds. Today is also the first day of classes for Carson City School District after winter break. As of the time of this writing, no delays have been announced.

If you do go out on the east side of town today, please be aware of the mustang herding operation being conducted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office along East College Parkway late Sunday morning into the afternoon. There may be traffic delays and detours.

The first weekend of 2019 also means the first Saturday of the month, which is the day of the Downtown Business Association Monthly Wine Walk in downtown Carson City, come rain, snow, wind or shine.
That's a good thing, too, because this weekend will likely have all of that.

Nevada Lore Series: Walker Lake's famed sea monster, Cecil the Serpent
Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Thu, 01/03/2019 - 10:20pmLegend tells of a terrifying monster that is supposed to reside in the depths of Walker Lake who has been sighted for centuries. For years, Cecil even had his own float in the Nevada Day Parade.
The legend of Cecil seems to have been first written down in the early-to-mid 1800s, when Nevada was first being explored by white settlers looking to spread out and maybe try their hand at finding gold or homesteading.

After being arrested, he was later booked for statutory sexual seduction, a gross misdemeanor.

UNR scientists find causes of 'firenado' in deadly northern California Carr Fire
Submitted by editor on Wed, 12/05/2018 - 2:40pmRENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.
The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.
