Carson Senators gear up for homecoming game tonight

Coming off its closest call of the season to date, the undefeated Carson High football team will be looking to continue the momentum into homecoming tonight.

Carson (5-0 overall, 4-0 Northern 4A conference) will host Damonte Ranch (0-5, 0-4) in a 7:30 p.m. conference contest. The Senators picked off a dramatic 16-13 overtime win over arch rival Douglas last week in Minden and have carried that momentum over to this week, according to coach Blair Roman.

Carson City road report for the week includes Carson High homecoming parade details

Here's the Carson City road construction report for Monday Oct. 4 through Sunday Oct. 10.
Before we get into the list, a shout-out is in order to all the motorists out there who've kept their cool over the past few months. Bottlenecks and delays are never any fun. If anything, the local road projects, including the Roop Street quagmire, may have taught us to get up a little earlier and exercise some patience, which is a good thing. Mindfulness can never do a person wrong.

With that, here's what's lined up for this week:

Senators finish third, look to build on momentum for next year

RENO — Now that the Carson High softball team has come close to doing something really special, CHS coach Scott Vickrey wants his squad to build on its momentum for possibly even a better finish next year.

Carson's season came to an end on Saturday at Bishop Manogue in the Northern 4A playoffs as the Senators were eliminated by Damonte Ranch 11-1 in five innings. But Carson's third place finish at zone should serve as a springboard for his young team, Vickrey said, which is losing just three seniors in Daria Leid, Megan Hein and Natalie Morrow.

Senators one win away from state tournament berth

RENO -- A long time has passed since the Carson High softball program reigned as a state champion in 1994 and won four successive zone tournament championships between 1995 and '98. And while the Senators still have a way to go before they return to that level, they are at least knocking on the door after splitting two games at the Northern 4A Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon.

'Team' Carson knocks off Reed in regional opener

RENO -- Sure, the Carson High softball team had its share of heroes on Thursday afternoon. When all was said and done, however, an all-around performance by "Team" Carson was the difference in an 8-5 victory against Reed at the Northern 4A Regional Softball Tournament at Bishop Manogue High School.

Senators could be darkhorses for State Championships

The road to the NIAA 4A State Championships is always difficult, but the Carson High softball team seems to have received as favorable path as possible. Two Northern 4A teams will advance to state and it figures that High Desert League champion Spanish Springs is the heavy favorite to earn one of those berths. And since Carson isn't in the Cougars' bracket, the Senators could be one of the darkhorses to grab that second spot to state.

Senators close book on their season with an exclamation point

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- Call it redemption, a harbinger of things to come, a catharsis. Whatever it was, the young Carson High baseball team made a resounding statement to end its season on Friday afternoon.

Senators clinch third-place in Sierra League

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- The Carson High softball team likes the position it's in heading into the Northern 4A playoffs.

CHS officially clinched a berth in the postseason with a 10-2 win over South Tahoe in the opener of a doubleheader on Friday and went on to win the second game as well, 5-0. Carson knew it would have third-place in the Sierra League locked up with a win in the opener after losses by Bishop Manogue and Fallon on Thursday.

Knorzer home run helps put Carson on track for key win

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- After one inning, it looked like the Carson High softball team might have a real battle on its hands Thursday afternoon.

But after watching South Tahoe pitcher Mel Smith strike out the side in the top of the first, Lauren Knorzer supplied a welcome boost with a two-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning that put the Senators on track to an important 11-4 Sierra League victory on the South Tahoe Middle School diamond.

Senators surge to win against Vikings' ace

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- When Austin Pacheco launched an RBI double to straightaway center field, the Carson High baseball team made a statement that it wasn't intimidated by South Tahoe ace pitcher Max De Lallo.
De Lallo got in his licks, but so did CHS as it rolled to its second straight victory over South Tahoe in an 11-6 win on Thursday. Adam Whitt started on the mound and pitched four solid innings and Cameron Mayville added four RBI for Carson.

J.V. Senators score another win over Vikings

This time, the Carson High J.V. baseball team didn't need any drama to get past South Tahoe.
After coming from behind to win 12-7 in nine innings the day before, Carson started fast and rolled to an 11-0 win at home against South Tahoe on Thursday afternoon.

Luke Maher and Rafe King combined to bang out six hits and Carson scored five runs in the second inning to take charge en route to a win that improved its Sierra League record to 11-6 in league (18-10 overall).

Charles in charge, Senators blank Vikings in series opener

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- David Charles wasn't a wash with sentimentality after his final start on the mound of his baseball career at Carson High. That frame of mind was a big reason why Charles wasn't caught up in any uncontrolled emotions and threw five shutout innings. And why Charles will be moving on to the next level.
