Carson City School District facing $1.96 million deficit

The Carson City School District is expecting a $1.96 million deficit for fiscal year 2017. Fiscal Director Andrew Fueling presented at the school board meeting Tuesday that the district budget projected a general fund expenditure about $64 million while only bringing in $62 million in revenue.

You can watch the Vikings take on the NY Giants tonight, or get your swing on with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club. Firkin and Fox has karaoke tonight: it’s a great way to start the week.

More than 500 Carson High School seniors packed the bleachers on the big gym’s south end Thursday afternoon to welcome the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office to campus for the coolest civics lesson ever.

Western Nevada College with host a local candidate debate at the Carson City campus on Monday, Oct. 3. Local Candidates for Mayor, Board of Supervisors, Assembly District 40, NSHE and the State School Board are scheduled to debate at Western Nevada College Cedar Building in Marlette Hall Room 100.

Doors open at 5:30 PM with the debate scheduled from 6:00 PM To 8:00 PM.

School community dedicates Robin Ross Library and Reading Cove at Fremont Elementary

On Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, Robin’s family, School Board trustees, staff members from throughout the district, retirees, and Fremont families met for the formal dedication of the Robin Ross Library.

Ms. Ross was a classroom teacher and literacy coach at Fremont Elementary for over 20 years. When she passed away last year after a lengthy illness, the staff and her retired colleagues wished to honor her memory.

Western Nevada College Professor Marilee Swirczek, driving force behind ‘Always Lost’ war exhibit, dies

Marilee Swirczek, a writer, professor of English, faculty member at Western Nevada College, and a driving force behind the highly acclaimed “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” photo exhibition, died Sunday.

Swirczek was project director for the “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” exhibition that originated in her creative writing class. The exhibition received nationwide recognition, with a national tour that began in 2010 and ends this July 29, 2016. Marilee was a former Carson City Supervisor from 1987 to 1989 and wife of Ron Swirczek, a member of the Carson City School Board. She was 68.

Rosseter Hart appointed to Carson City School Board

The Carson City School Board appointed its new member Tuesday night. Susan Rosseter Hart was voted as the new School Board trustee for District 6. The seat has been vacant since the end of March when the former trustee Deonne Contine resigned from the position.

Evangelist holds rally at State Capitol in Carson City

Well-known Christian evangelist Franklin Graham held a rally Wednesday afternoon at the State Capitol amphitheatre in Carson City, encouraging people to live out their faith and get involved in the political process.

The event was part of Graham's Decision America Tour 2016, a national outreach effort of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) to visit the state capitals of all 50 states this year, spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and encourage grass-roots involvement in the political process in communities across the country.
