As the Nevada Legislature resumes session this week, Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury and other officials are looking for clarification how to implement the legalization of recreational marijuana, which was approved by Nevada voters in November’s election.

Carson City is saying no to recreational pot dispensaries for the next six months. The Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday passed a temporary moratorium on recreational marijuana dispensaries while the Nevada Department of Taxation works on establishing a more thorough set of regulations on the recently legalized drug.

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question we must answer on Nov. 8.

Or, is it?

I’ve taken my time this year to deliberate over the matter of recreational marijuana legalization — in spite of my general instinctive opposition to mind-altering substances — consulting with area experts on drugs and drug policy.

Following hours of interviews, reading and research, my conclusion is that there is something more sinister at stake here over Question 2 than simply the legalization of an illicit drug.

Partnership Carson City advises the community on issues of health and well-being for youth and families. In this year’s election, Nevada voters will consider an initiative that would legalize marijuana. That initiative is known as Question 2. The Steering Committee of Partnership Carson City urges all voters to review the details of this proposal and consider the immediate and long-term impacts it may have on our community before making this important choice.

Nevada Leaders Oppose Question 2:

“As Governor and a former Federal Judge, I have seen first-hand the negative effects that marijuana for recreational purposes can have on our state and our communities. Proponents of this measure claim it will help education, it will not. What it will do is create health and safety problems that Nevada cannot afford. Legalizing marijuana would have devastating consequences for our state and for Nevada families and I would ask that voters join with me and Vote No on 2 when they head to the polls this fall.” – Governor Brian Sandoval

Finally. A bipartisan all out political campaign is launched against the pot industry written and financed Question 2 to legalize commercial marijuana in Nevada.

Strong statements of opposition to Q2 were made by Governor Brian Sandoval, Lt. Governor Mark Hutchison, Attorney General Adam Laxalt, Senator Dean Heller and 3 members of Nevada's House delegation.

On, Thursday, Sept. 8, the Board of Directors of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce voted to advise their members to vote against Question 2 – The Marijuana Initiative.

A question on the upcoming ballot asking voters to legalize the use of recreational marijuana in Nevada may seem simple. But a local attorney is urging residents to take a closer look to understand all the possible implications.

Question 2 - The legalization of recreational marijuana will be the topic of discussion at the Open Forum at the Carson Senior Center on Friday, June 3, at 10:30am in the Tahoe Room.
