Sheriff's Office, Partnership Carson City launch summer marijuana awareness campaign
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with Partnership Carson City will be beginning a marijuana awareness campaign. Efforts to expand the legalization of recreational marijuana use is increasing interest in marijuana, and stoking myths about its use.
Because these myths paint marijuana in a favorable light, they could influence marijuana consumption among children, adolescents and young adults.
Scientific evidence indicates that marijuana use is associated with various critical risks for adults, youth, communities and businesses. These include increased likelihood of:
— Delayed cognitive and brain development in youth
— Educational failure
— Social problems
— Mental and physical health problems
— Automobile and other accidents
— Reduced job performance and productivity
— Addiction
— Other drug use
— Emergency medical visits
— Over-intoxication/over-dose
— Death
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with Partnership Carson City will be working to combat this problem. During the summer months, deputies will be patrolling off road areas used as frequent “party” spots at night.
Deputies will also be patrolling areas of the beaches of Lake Tahoe, along with checking carnivals and other areas frequented by juveniles in town. While patrolling, deputies will be looking for minors in possession or under the influence of alcohol and or marijuana.
Deputies will also be teaching marijuana awareness and prevention classes for both kids and adults. When school resumes in the fall, Deputies will be teaching the marijuana classes in schools and to the PTO. Contact Deputy Jarrod Adams at JAdams@carson.org for questions.
