The spring thaw has arrived, and my event list is getting longer. Carson City has some fun stuff happening this weekend, so please take a look. SATURDAY:

Western Nevada College is kicking it up a notch to expand campus activities by introducing club soccer teams to the college beginning in Fall 2016, officials announced Thursday.

The program will be directed by the Associated Students of Western Nevada, with support from Student Life, and will be open to all students. Both men’s and women’s teams are envisioned. WNC hopes to field soccer teams at several levels of play: Recreational, Competitive and Premier, if interest is strong enough.

The Brewery Arts Center has Celtic duo Men of Worth playing in the Black Box Theater, folk singer/songwriter Liam Kyle Cahill is at Living the Good Life, you'll find the Whitehats performing at the West Side Pour House, and Sassafras has a night of rock with Year of the Fist and Double Header. Those who love dance should check out World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee or the West Coast Swing night that Yaple's Ballroom hosts every third Friday. Let's kick off this weekend right, Carson City.

Carson High School’s HOSA — Future Health Professionals, one of four Career Technical Student Organizations that are part of the CHS Career and Technical Education program, sent more than 100 students to compete in the state HOSA Future Health Professionals Leadership Conference in Las Vegas this month thanks to a $4,400 grant from Partnership Carson City and fundraising efforts by students.

As the old saying goes, "when opportunity knocks, answer the door."

Starting an exercise program is a feat that should be congratulated and admired. However, it is also something that should be done with thought and concern. It is important to implement an appropriate exercise program that is safe and conducive to an individual’s health. Often, individuals try to do too much causing serious injuries when exercising. REMSA would like to remind people of the importance of safety when taking part in a workout routine.

Carson Middle School's annual Chili Bingo Night takes place on Friday, March 18, in the school's cafeteria. The event begins at 6 p.m. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to Carson Middle School Band program which is raising money for new instruments, storage space and upgraded percussion.

A Carson City jail inmate who allegedly consumed hand sanitizer, was booked Saturday on suspicion of gross misdemeanor assault on a police officer and resisting after he charged at jail staff in which a taser was used to stop him, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
