Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest

Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest is coming to Carson City on June 30, 2012. The planning for this event is going fast and furious and we are anticipating a great second annual show. This event is being held on June 30, 2012, under the auspices of the Carson City Downtown Business Association and is being managed by Arlington Group Events. The CCSO 9th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge will take place at Legends. See these highly trained men and women compete for glory in slow motion!

Carson City Library will present “The Mono Lake Story”, a film, on Thursday, May 3rd, beginning at 6:30 p.m. A previous article provided an earlier date for the showing of this DVD, Thursday, May 3rd is the correct date. Mono Lake Committee Volunteer Jackie Stroud will be on-hand for questions and discussion about the restoration of this diverse ecosystem.

This is the opening paragraph of local author Jeani Ambrose’s first published book, Legacy of the Father. Legacy can best be described as a paranormal mystery with romantic overtones.

The runaway truck ramp at the bottom of Mount Rose Highway in Incline Village was the scene of another tragedy today as a truck driver was killed trying to stop his vehicle using the ramp.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports that the truck was carrying composite decking material on a flatbed trailer. The driver used the ramp to stop the vehicle, but the cargo broke loose and crushed the cab of the truck.

Figures released today by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation show the state's unemployment rate in March dropped to 12 percent overall, with Carson City down to 12.4 percent.

Unemployment dropped .3 percent statewide over the previous month, and 1.6 percent over the last year.

The jobs picture in Carson City, while showing improvement, is lagging slightly behind the statewide average, with a .2 percent drop in unemployment over February, and 1.1 percent drop over the last year.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will be hosting a joint training exercise with several other area police departments on Saturday, April 21 at 505 E. King Street (the old Kinkead building). Residents are being warned that on the day of the excerise they may hear what appears to be gunshots from the area around that facility.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office has announced that they will be holding their Citizen Academy beginning May 2. These academies are available several times a year to the public who are interested in learning how the Sheriff's Office operates. Classes will run from May 2 through June 20 and will be held from 6 p.m. through 9 p.m. Wednesday evenings at the Ormsby Room of the Sheriff's Office.

There is no charge for these classes. The deadline for completed applications is 5 p.m. April 27, 2012.

The annual Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony will be held at noon May 3, 2012, at the Nevada State Capitol. The ceremony will honor the 120 peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Nevada.

Three officers have been killed in the line of duty over the last year: Deputy Sheriff Jack D. London, Clark County Sheriff's Office; Special Agent Don C. Ware, US DEA, Las Vegas; and Correctional Officer Tracy A. Hardin, Nevada Department of Corrections.

The Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Run will begin on April 26.

Press Release for DUI Checkpoint March 17th, 2012.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Joining Forces, will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint from 6:00 pm to midnight on Saturday, March 17th. Sheriff’s Office personnel will be greeting all drivers that pass through the checkpoint. To keep traffic flowing smoothly, any drivers that show signs of being under the influence will be directed to a second screening area to avoid back up during the checkpoint.

Carson City Library and Nevada Legal Services have teamed together to provide free legal educational clinics and workshops every 4th Thursday, of each month. The next clinic is scheduled on Thursday, February 23rd. The 1:00 workshop will provide general instructions and assistance regarding the completion of self-help forms for those who are self-represented litigants. A Notary Public will also be available. Following the self-help workshop, a free legal education clinic will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sealing Criminal Records will be the topic covered on the 23rd.

Maurice White has announced that he is running for Carson City Board of Supervisors Ward 2 seat, currently held by Shelly Aldean.

Aldean announced recently that she will not seek a third full term.

Millions Could Overlook Valuable Tax Credit

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Millions of workers could overlook a special federal tax credit because they don't know about it. As a result, they could miss out on up to $5,751 extra in their federal income tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. Last year, on average, the credit boosted refunds for eligible workers by $2,100.

Unemployment figures released this morning show the state's overall unemployment rate held steady at 13.4 percent, still the highest in the nation and well above the 9 percent national average.

Carson City's jobless rate dropped to 12 percent in October, down from 12.4 percent the previous month. In October 2010, the unemployment was 13.1 percent.

Unemployment in the Las Vegas metro area dropped to 13.1 percent, down from 13.4 percent in September. The Reno metro area also saw a drop, from 12.6 to 12.1 percent.

Douglas County Sheriff's deputies have located the vehicle belonging to a Gardnerville woman missing since Friday, and believe she was killed when it rolled down an embankment near the East Fork of the Carson River.

Loraine Bosch of Gardnerville was last reported to be heading to the FISH Thrift store in Carson City in her 1986 green Ford truck on Friday. That vehicle was located Monday night, heavily damaged with a body trapped inside.

In recognition of National Adoption Month, Carson City Library will host author Jennifer Lauck on Friday, November 18th, at 6:00 p.m., at the Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC), 108 East Proctor Street in downtown Carson City. Her personal journey tells the story of heartbreak and tragedy. Her early childhood was spent living in Carson City. The telling of her story is about perseverance, courage and the remarkable capacity of humans to transcend the worst of losses with grace.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 0910 hours, the Sheriff's Office received a "hold up" alarm from the Nevada State Bank, at 4267 South Carson Street. The suspect was identified as an adult female who showed a handgun to the bank teller. The female presented a demand note, directing the teller to keep her hands where they could be seen and to put the money into a bag. The note also directed the teller to have other tellers move to one side together and keep their hands visible. The demand note read "Any mistakes and I start shooting"

Nevada Highway Patrol reports that 31-year-old Carolyn M. Dana of Carson City was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. 50 Alternate eight miles south of Fernley on Sunday afternoon.

Gov. Brian Sandoval yesterday signed an executive order directing the P-16 Advisory Council to review education data systems in Nevada.
The Council, created by state statute, is intended to help coordinate education efforts in Nevada from the preschool through postsecondary levels and has the authority to address the data information system for public school students.

A federal effort to pump affordable loan money into rural communities across the nation is bringing the city of Caliente a brand new pumper truck and a rescue vehicle with a mini-pumper, and not a moment too soon.
