Bethlehem Lutheran School Open House

Bethlehem Lutheran School and Preschool invite you to our annual Open House which will be held Thursday, January 29th from 5:30-7:00 pm. All classrooms, Preschool through 8th grade will be open. 6th and 8th grade science projects and 7th grade social studies projects will be on display in the gym. This is a great time to see what our students have been doing. New families will be able to talk with teachers and staff.

This Thursday is both National Strawberry Ice Cream Day and National Hat Day. You may want some ice cream for your vocal cords after you hit the Karaoke circuit; Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge, and the Feisty Goat Pub all want to see you wearing your performing hat tonight. On a more local level, today also brings the annual State of the State address delivered by our Governor, Brian Sandoval.

Head down to the Friends of the Carson City Library’s book store tonight to hear author Mark S. Bacon speak about his newest book, Death in Nostalgia City.

A talk about the freeway art in Carson City by Mary Fischer, author of Carson City History in Motion is tonight, as well; sponsored by the Douglas County Historical Society, it will be held at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville. If you need to sing your heart out, check out karaoke at the Feisty Goat Pub or at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

$2.5 million Head Start grant secured for Nevada

With cuts made to the program because of the sequester, Head Start in Nevada will receive a $2.5 million boost after the Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday it will receive a grant.

The $2,559,327 grant is designed to expand projects in Nevada and will be funded through the University of Nevada Reno, said Sen. Harry Reid.

Fizz! Boom! Read! And Spark a Reaction: Join the Summer Reading Program

Fizz! Boom! Read! And Spark a Reaction this summer at the Carson City Library and discover the amazing world of science. The 2014 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult, with programs, prize drawings, story hours, a reading club, and more.

There is a Read-to-Me portion of the program that families are invited to join as well. Registration for the Summer Reading Program has begun and continues this Saturday, June 14th, at the annual Kiwanis Breakfast for Books. The pancake breakfast will take place on the library lawn from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

Preschool Open Enrollment

Small Blessings Christian Preschool is now accepting enrollment of three and four-year-olds for the fall school year. Small Blessings provides a quality preschool education in a loving and supportive environment with certified teachers and a 1 to 8 teacher/student ratio. Three-year-olds attend Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am. Cost is $100/month. Four-year-olds may attend Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 8:30am to 11:30am OR 12:30 to 3:30pm. Cost for the three day a week session is $150/month. Small Blessings is an outreach of First United Methodist Church in Carson City.

Nevada’s state engineers to cut ribbon at Carson City Library

From the Carson City Library on April 14 at 6 p.m. a group of six engineers are slated to cut the grand opening ribbon on a traveling exhibit supported by the National Science Foundation, titled Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference.

Nevada State Engineer Mr. Jason King, P.E. as well as five previous Nevada State Engineers who served in the top post starting from 1967 through 2010 will join King to celebrate arrival of the engineering-focused interactive exhibit.

First United Methodist Church in Carson City offers Vacation Bible School in July

Vacation Bible School arrives at First United Methodist Church in Carson City July 15-19. This year's theme is "Everywhere Fun Fair: Where God's World Comes Together!"

Vacation Bible School is open to children four-years-old (with preschool/Sunday School experience) through those starting the sixth grade.

Vacation Bible School costs $20 for registration and scholarships are available.

Grace Works: The Church Has Left the Building!

Introducing Grace Works, or as others have called it “The Church has left the Building!” This is a Sunday when area churches show God’s love through providing services, rather than going to services. It is an event that has been going on in several other communities across the US, involving thousands of people on a given Sunday. The First Presbyterian Church started it here in Carson City two years ago; last year Ministerios Una Puerta Al Camino ( The Church of the Door to the Way) joined them. Over 150 people participated.

CARSON CITY – A state panel charged with implementing a system to track individual student performance from preschool through entry into the workforce is recommending that $4 million in state funds be appropriated by Gov. Brian Sandoval and the 2013 Legislature to help accomplish the task.

Downtown Carson City lights up for Christmas

Downtown Carson City celebrated the start of the holiday season with the annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights.

Streets were closed off as throngs of people gathered in front of the state capitol to watch as the lights for the two giant Christmas trees were turned on.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on the back of an antique fire truck, with Mayor Bob Crowell riding shotgun. After the state's trees were turned on, the crowd headed over to the First Presbyterian Church where the city's Christmas tree was turned on.

Governor Asks Council to Review Education Data Systems

Gov. Brian Sandoval yesterday signed an executive order directing the P-16 Advisory Council to review education data systems in Nevada.
The Council, created by state statute, is intended to help coordinate education efforts in Nevada from the preschool through postsecondary levels and has the authority to address the data information system for public school students.

University’s early childhood autism program gets help from local foundation

The University of Nevada Reno's highly acclaimed Early Childhood Autism Program is getting some help from the Sierra Kids Foundation next week, Dec. 16 – 18, when it sponsors the Wild West Shootout basketball tournament.

The annual foundation tournament will be held at Reno High School. More than $100,000 in scholarships for children needing the program's services has been given away over the past seven years, according to Patrick Ghezzi, director of the program and Nevada psychology professor.
