Carson City area weather: Gusty conditions expected tonight prompt Wind Advisory

Unsettled weather will continue to make its way into the Sierra and Carson City region with high winds moving into the area tonight, according to the National Weather Service. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Carson City region from 7 tonight until 4 a.m. Friday.

Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra has been issued for this afternoon through Friday morning.

NV Energy reports widespread power outages in Carson City due to high winds

UPDATE 6PM: NV Energy reports three outages with 16 customers without power as of 6 p.m., in Carson City. There's one power outage in Douglas County with 242 customers without power and 13 outages with 299 customers without power in Washoe County.

UPDATE: All but around 70 NV Energy customers had their power restored in the Mound House area just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday after an outage that began shortly after 5 p.m. NV Energy said the outage happened in three neighborhoods in the Mound House area and had affected just over 300 customers.

Power outage affects traffic signals; motorists rerouted from Roop Street to College Parkway

A power outage this afternoon affecting portions of Roop, Emerson Drive and College Parkway has caused traffic signal light issues.
As of 5 p.m. Carson City sheriff's deputies are rerouting motorists from Roop Street to Eastbound College Parkway while southbound Emerson is being rerouted to West College Parkway, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
NV Energy expects to have power restored within an hour, according to dispatch.

Motorists who normally travel in these areas can expect delays.

The outage, which happened this afternoon, has affected 125 NV Energy customers.

NV Energy: Faulty underground cables blamed for widespread Dayton power outage

A power outage Wednesday night in Dayton that affected more than 2,400 customers was fully restored by 11:50 p.m., said Faye Andersen, spokeswoman for NV Energy.

NV Energy says underground cable blamed for Thursday's Dayton area power outage

An underground cable that affected the electrical distribution system is what caused Thursday's power outage in Lyon County that affected 2,475 Dayton area customers, a NV Energy spokeswoman said.

"It was a bad underground cable which is what made it difficult to get to unlike an outage from a power line where it can be reached easily," said Faye Andersen, spokeswoman for NV Energy.

UPDATE 7:50AM: Residents around the Dayton area report their power had returned before midnight. No word yet on what the cause of the outage was other than an equipment problem around the Dayton Valley Airpark area.

Lyon County dispatch has reported a significant power outage in the Dayton area and law enforcement and fire resources are busy with response to alarm calls and traffic control, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.

Wind whipped debris from building on Stewart Street causing power issues

Debris that flew off a roof at the old Copeland lumber building on Stewart Street near the DMV and NDOT buildings in Carson City is causing some problems in the area this morning, including power loss.

Carson City dispatch reports wind scattered a large amount of debris in the area. There are reports of power problems associated with the debris and downed lines, according to Carson City dispatch.

Power outage affects about 30 customers around North Division area

About 30 NV Energy customers in the area of North Division on the west side of Carson City were without power late Friday morning. The outage happened at around 11:15 a.m. The cause is under investigation, according to NV Energy.

June Lake fire in Mono County under control, Highway 158 reopened

UPDATE THURSDAY 3:40PM: Go here for the latest on the King Fire. June Lake Road was to be opened at 2 p.m. Thursday. Here's a news brief from Mono County Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE: June Lake Fire Road Closures. The fire remains controlled with small hot spots. Fire crews continue to work on these hot spots.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will begin letting people through Hwy 158 beginning at 1:00 PM with the advisement of fire activity and equipment on the roadway. Please be aware and respect all fire equipment, personnel and hazards in or on the roadway. Think safety first for our fire and law enforcement personnel and for yourselves. Please use caution when traveling through the area.

Hwy 158 is anticipated to be fully open at 2:00 PM. Again, please be mindful of fire personnel and equipment and all first responders and law enforcement in the area. Travel safe!

UPDATE 330PM: According to a Tweet this afternoon from Caltrans, Highway 50 is back open but the westbound No. 2 lane will remain closed overnight because of ongoing King Fire issues. A portion of the highway and artery for traffic into and out of South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, had been closed since Tuesday, from Sly Park Road to Fresh Pond, due to burning trees falling on the road.

Meanwhile, the June Fire burning in Mono County is estimated to be 65 acres and 50 percent contained.

Firefighters still working brush fire at Ash Canyon, rain helps douse flames at other fires

UPDATE 8:04PM: Firefighters called to a brush fire in the area of Duck Hill. Firefighters were alerted of smoke seen in the Goni Road area.

UPDATE 7:35PM: About 70 NV customers in the Indian Hills area remain without power, according to NV Energy. There are three other areas without power: East Corbett, with 5 customers, Hiko Court, 28, and South Curry, 13.

UPDATE: 6:27PM: A power outage continues in the area off of North Roop and William Street, also affecting John Street, according to NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist. About 176 customers are without power there. Estimated time for it to be restored is around 8:15 p.m.

Another power outage, affecting 15 customers, is near South Curry Street between Fifth Street and Fairview. Both outages were likely caused by lightning strikes, Walquist said.

UPDATE 6:10 PM: The two fires in Kings Canyon have been extinguished thanks to rain and citizens who helped in the firefighting efforts, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

The Ash Canyon fire is the only one burning right now, he said. It is high up into the canyon and about 1/2 mile off of the trail. Firefighters are hiking into the area. The good news is the heavy rain aided in knocking down much of the smoke and flame, he said.

A handful of firefighters remain in the field behind Little and Roop. That fire burned about 1/2 an acre and came close to nearby homes but heavy rain and hail moved in just in time to help knock it down, Giomi said. It is currently being mopped up.

Gusty walls of wind and dust move into Carson City

UPDATE: NV Energy reports 621 customers are without power after winds caused damage to power lines. Spokeswoman Faye Anderson said she hopes to narrow down the affected areas soon. Readers report the outage continues as of around 5 p.m. around the northwest side of town.

UPDATE: National Weather Service meteorologist Zach Tolby said Carson City experienced a "gust front" shortly after 4 this afternoon, bringing strong winds and kicking up walls of dust in town. Much of the front has moved out of the area and, as of 4:30 p.m., was south of Reno.

Underground network blamed for early Sunday NV Energy power outage in Mound House

A power outage affected 1,025 NV Energy customers early Sunday morning in the East Carson City and Mound House areas.

NV Energy Spokeswoman Stefanie McCaffrey said there were three separate outages early Sunday morning caused by an underground fault indicator that failed.

NV Energy: Power restored to 159 Carson City customers

A power outage affected 159 customers in the areas of Sonoma, Jackson, Grant and Silver Sage early Wednesday morning in Carson City, according to NV Energy. Power was restored at around 8 a.m.

There were outages associated with it at around midnight. Carson City firefighters responded to the outage in which firefighters on the scene reported smoke coming from an underground vault area near Baker and Sonoma streets. NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Andersen said the outage was underground line related.

NV Energy: Power restored in South Carson City to all but around 40 customers

UPDATE 11:09PM: NV Energy reports that power has been restored to nearly all 2,249 customers affected in Monday night's power outage in south Carson City.

Service has been restored to nearly all customers but there's still around 40 customers without power around the Stafford Way and Hickory areas, said NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist. Those 40 customers should be back on line by sometime between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, he said.

While a definitive cause has not been determined, Walquist said there was a fire in an underground vault which tripped a line out of the Curry Street station which is what caused the majority of the outage. NV Energy utility crews were able to isolate the areas and restore most of the service.

Lyon County manager Jeff Page reports a large power outage for the majority of Mason Valley. NV Energy has been notified, said Page. The cause of the outage is unknown at this time and it is unknown when the power will return.

NV Energy: Power outage due to underground cable failure

An underground cable failure knocked out power to 121 NV Energy customers in Carson City early Thursday morning.

NV Energy spokesman Carl Walquist said the problem area originated on Goldfield Avenue. Crews had to install a temporary above-ground cable to serve customers while the underground cable was down. The underground cable will be repaired today, he said.

A Carson Now reader reports their power was out on Appaloosa Court just off Saliman from 12:30 a.m. until 4:30 a.m.

Small fire near Sundridge Road south of Carson City in Douglas County knocks out power

A small fire Thursday afternoon near the Carson City and Douglas County line has been contained but caused a power outage in the Indian Hills area and around Sundridge Road.

East Fork Fire and Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 2 p.m. fire on the corner of Highway 395 and Sunridge Road, said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks.

The fire was quickly contained, however it has caused a power outage in the area that include the traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 395 and Sunridge.

Served warrants lead to string of arrests in Carson City for felony-related crimes

A 20-year-old Carson City man was jailed Tuesday and faces statutory sexual seduction and failure to appear charges. Jose Alberto Garcia-Perez was booked into the Carson City Jail after being transported by law officials in Las Vegas.

A warrant was issued for the statutory sexual seduction charge, a gross misdemeanor, on April 5 out of Carson City Justice Court while the failure to appear warrant was issued June 24. He is being held without bail on the failure to appear charge, and $5,000 bail for the other charge.

Traffic lights working along Carson Street after power outage

UPDATE: A power outage affecting traffic lights from Long to 5th Street in Carson City this afternoon appears to be resolved. A downed power line from a gust of wind reportedly knocked out the power at around 12:40 p.m.

Traffic lights were up and functional at 12:55 p.m. along Washington and Robinson streets and other streets began to follow, according to Carson City dispatch.

Power outage affects 3,200 customers in north Carson City

UPDATE 6:23PM: KTVN reports on its Facebook page most of the customers affected by Saturday's power outage in Carson City have had their power restored. Crews are still working to restore power to the areas that remain, but say it could still take several hours.

Power outage affects NV Energy customers around Stewart Street

NV Energy customers in the area of Stewart, John and Fall streets were without power early Saturday evening after a transformer blew. Power was to be restored by 6 p.m., NV Energy tells the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were doing traffic control operations at Stewart Street and William because of traffic signals not functioning.

Power outage affects 800 homes from Mica Drive to Johnson Lane

UPDATE 5:12PM: NV Energy reports that 800 homes south of Carson City remain without power late this afternoon after an outage that affected an area from Mica Drive to the south side of Johnson Lane. Initially the outage, which happened at around 1:30 this afternoon, affected 2,000 customers but 1,200 were quickly restored through a series of switching mechanisms, said NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Andersen.
The power circuits are underground and the system is being corrected by sections, she said.

NHP issues nearly 12,000 cell phone-related distracted driving traffic citations

Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol issued nearly 12,000 traffic citations to motorists observed talking, texting or reading non-voice communication while operating a motor vehicle on Nevada’s highways in 2012.

Thirty of the offenders last year received their second citation for the same offense with 25 of those witnessed on their phone for a third time and cited once more. In all, as of Dec. 26, 2012, there were 11,992 citations issued.

Power restored to nearly 4,000 NV Energy customers in Carson City, Douglas County

UPDATE 4PM: Power was restored to about around 3,900 NV Energy customers in south Carson City and north Douglas County at about 3:30 this afternoon.

NV Energy reports crews continue work at the substation where the outage happened but managed to get electricity back on to the affected areas. Officials also revised the number of homes and businesses affected during the outage to around 3,900.

A power outage this afternoon is affecting about 6,000 NV Energy customers in southern Carson City and northern Douglas County.

Storm cleanup continues in Carson City

Chainsaws are buzzing around Carson City this morning following Sunday's storm that whipped the area with average wind gusts of 40-plus mph and more than an inch-and-a-half of rain.

The city's public works and road department have been canvassing the town this morning, looking for stray limbs and branches that have covered the roads. Homeowners with chainsaws have been seen hacking up much of the stray branches, which block driveways and straddle fence posts.
