Nevada Senator Harry Reid today on Earth Day announced that USDA Rural Development has approved a loan of $3,002,000 and a grant of $2,312,794 to replace the wastewater treatment plant that serves the Virginia City and Gold Hill communities in Storey County. The existing plant is past its useful life.

Whether you're looking to haul junk from the basement to the landfill, are a senior and need help getting rid of debris, or maybe you need to get rid of old cans of paint, Carson City has several programs available.

Here's a list provided by the city of what's available:

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (US Forest Service/LTBMU) and the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) have been working together for a couple of years to improve mountain bike trails all while protecting the natural resources of our local forests. Lake Tahoe is a special place, loved and used by millions of visitors each year from around the world. The local forest service has been at the forefront of working collaboratively with user groups and the public to ensure that protecting the environment of this special place, still allows for uses that are compatible and fun.

Wednesday was a deeply emotional day for both lawmakers and testifiers at legislature; discussion on whether concealed weapons should be permitted on Nevada’s college campuses spurred verbal attacks between individuals on both sides of the debate, and eventually tears shed down the cheeks of one assemblyman.

The Nevada Assembly held a hearing Wednesday on Assembly Bill 143, a bill that would allow for concealed carry permit holders to bring concealed firearms onto NSHE campuses.

Though a similar bill failed to make it through the Assembly during the 2011 session, Assemblywoman Michele Fiore and others have returned to try and pass legislation this session. In a hearing that stretched for more than 2 hours, educators, legislators and more testified and argued about the legality and actuality of allowing concealed weapons on campus.

Republican Lt. Governor Association Chair Brian Krolicki of Nevada and vice chairman Tate Reeves of Mississippi issued the following statement after sending a letter on behalf of 22 Republican lieutenant governors to President Obama and Secretary Kerry strongly urging approval of the Presidential Permit application on the Keystone XL Pipeline.

After the horrific events of Sandy Hook, it was only a matter of time before Nevada — one of the most liberal gun control states in the country — met to discuss concealed weapons on campuses. While K-12 schools are currently protected under federal law as “gun-free zones,” the Senate Judiciary Committee met this morning to discuss SB 223, a bill that proposes employees and faculty members be permitted to carry concealed weapons on higher education campuses.

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.

And, with our current fabulous weather, you would be remiss if you did not take advantage of our record setting high temperatures, it may not last!

Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of March 13-19.

Permits will be available March 11 for opening burning that will run from March 16 to April 14, the Carson City Fire Department announced Tuesday.

The open burn period gives residents in the city an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris. In order to make this a safe experience, the Carson City Fire Department requires a burn permit and valid permit number before residents are allowed to to burn. Permits will be issued on a walk-in basis at the following locations:

CARSON CITY — Beginning today, Nevada no longer recognizes Arizona's concealed weapons permits, the Nevada Department of Public Safety announced.

At a Feb. 28 meeting of the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ association, the groups unanimously agreed to end the recognition of concealed weapon permits. According to a news release, the action was taken in accordance with Nevada Revised Statue 202.3689.

A review of proposed changes in the code and permit fees governing food establishments in Carson City could spark considerable business interest Thursday.

At the last Board of Supervisor meeting, the public (citizens) were cleared from the room so that City Staff and the Board members could discuss issues relating to the Budget.

If you’re a fisherman or fisherwoman, it’s that time of the year to remind you to purchase your Nevada 2013-2014 fishing license.

That new fishing license year begins on March 1 and it will run through the last day in February, 2014.
As a special tip you would be well advised to purchase that new license ASAP, because if you forget, go fishing and get checked by “The Friendly Old Game Warden,” he isn’t going to be very happy nor will you.

Mr. Gallagher stated (and I am paraphrasing here) “our children are not allowed to pray in public schools”

“The United States Supreme Court has never held that students cannot pray in school.

For the first time since 1987, Lake Tahoe has a new regional plan for development and land use.
Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.

Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.

CARSON CITY – A newly elected Republican state lawmaker plans to push forward with a bill next session to allow students and others with permits to carry concealed weapons on the campuses of the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, R- Las Vegas, elected to Assembly District 4 in November, has submitted a bill draft request to prepare a measure for consideration in the 2013 legislative session.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Christmas tree permits are sold out but tree cutting permits remain available on BLM lands in the Pinenut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya mountains east of Fallon, and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne.

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District has begun selling Christmas tree cutting permits. The permits allow cutting a pinyon pine or juniper tree on designated BLM lands primarily in the Pinenut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya mountains east of Fallon, and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne. Maps and directions are available with permit purchase. The cost per permit is $5.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of holiday tree permits the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23. Permits cost $10 each (cash or check only, no credit cards) with a limit of two permits per family. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar in designated cutting areas and must abide by specific permit conditions for proper and responsible collection. Harvesting smaller diameter trees offers residents and visitors a traditional holiday experience while helping to thin the forest.

CARSON CITY -- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Sierra Front Field Office in Carson City, Nevada is requesting the community's input in the development of an environmental assessment (EA) for a motorcycle event to be held in Virginia City, Storey County, Nev.

The Virginia City Motorcycle Club (Club) has submitted to the BLM a five year Special Recreation Permit (SRP) application for the “Virginia City Grand Prix” event. Comments will be accepted until July 26, 2012.

This is an annual reminder that Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, will close on Saturday, June 30 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.

Seasonal drying conditions, increasing daytime temperatures and a number of human-caused fires have prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office and the Nevada Division of Forestry’s Sierra Forest Fire Protection District to announce the implementation of fire restrictions on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at 12:01 a.m., and lasting until further notice.

Douglas County sent out an update this morning on the TRE Fire, which they say is now 6,600 acres. They also believe the fire was caused by a private residential open burn.

The fire has grown to 6,600 acres burned. 2 homes and 17 outbuildings have been reported damaged or burned from the fire. No personnel injuries have been reported or discovered.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is encouraging local residents and part-time homeowners to become “wildfire aware” by taking advantage of public education activities during Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Week happening May 26 to June 3.

“With the fifth anniversary of the Angora fire coming up, this is a good opportunity for our community to discuss the importance of wildfire awareness,” said Joanne Marchetta, Executive Director of TRPA.
