Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:
Saturday – Monday: Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum. Rides begin approximately every 40 minutes, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fares are $8 for ages 12 and over; $4 for ages 4 to 11 and Museum members; and FREE for ages 3 and under.

Papa John’s celebrates grand opening in Carson City

Pizza was king Wednesday night as dozens attended the grand opening celebration of the new Papa John’s Pizza franchise located at 1425 E. William Street.

Where has the time gone? We are moments away from Labor Day weekend with its Best of the West Rib Cook-off, monthly Downtown Wine Walk, Fallon Cantaloupe Festival, and Virginia City’s Civil War Days. Enjoy a walk in the Ronald D. Wilson Memorial Park, just west of Emerson Drive. Canyon White, the award-winning singer-songwriter, can be found at her weekly gig at Living the Good Life joined by Keith Alan Barnett. Dance it up: swing at El Charro, country line dance at Carson Lanes, or square dancing in Genoa are on the table.

Carson City foundation hosts Wungnema open house Labor Day weekend

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will hold an open house for the Wungnema House in Mills Park during Labor Day weekend on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, from 2 to 5 p.m. The building is accessible by the Park entrance on Saliman Road, opposite the high school. Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building and about the foundation.

Carson City Parks and Recreation Youth Programs partnered with the Salvation Army to start up a school supply donation drive. Our Summer Camp children and families have now helped us fill 5-plus large bins with school supplies and backpacks.

The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West has returned and will be at the Community Center tonight, if you were quick enough to grab free tickets from the Chamber of Commerce. With bullying awareness and prevention being addressed throughout the country, a nationally recognized comedian, motivational speaker and youth advocate will appear Wednesday in Carson City to give his unique take and problem solving advice to teachers, youth and parents.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorneys Office are investigating allegations of inappropriate contact involving children enrolled in the city’s parks and recreation summer program.

Holy Tuesday, Batman! Today is jam-packed full of options around our valley. A walk with Parks and Rec, a movie viewing with the Classic Cinema Club, and life-sized board games at the Library are all on the docket for today. The big story, of course, is National Night Out with the Carson City Sheriff's Department. Free food, activities, fun, and even an aircraft or two descend on Mills Park for the annual party.

Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk to Riverview Park

Meet in the parking lot for the Korean War Memorial at 600 Marsh Road, Carson City. Bring water and appropriate shoes are required. No sandals. Hat and sunscreen recommended.

These walks are 1-2 miles in length with none of negligible elevation gain. and frequently on paved or smooth paths. The walks will usually be of approximately 1 hour in duration.

Carson City Salvation Army launches annual backpack and school supply drive

The Salvation Army is collecting backpacks and school supplies for disadvantaged children through August 17. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County will receive backpacks and school supplies as needed. The Salvation Army will have a distribution of the back packs and a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the School Districts for distribution to children in transition.

I am quite fond of Tuesdays. For a weekday, they usually have some great offerings. Today's Easy Walk with the Parks and Recreation Department takes you along the Moffat Open Space on the east side of town. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada offers 'Books and Brags', essentially a story with craft time. Have a hot time with the fire-dancers of Controlled Burn: they meet at A to Zen on Tuesdays and welcome newcomers.

Responding to public concerns that the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department follows a different watering schedule than residents and businesses, Carson City Public Works Director Darren Schulz said conserving water is a priority across the board for the city.

The fireworks went off in Carson City last night without a hitch, bringing the end of another incredible weekend. Today may feel a little like a Monday, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself. Check out the new Spirit of America show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Show. Our local Classic Cinema Club meets tonight and will be showing 'A Walk in the Sun' with Dana Andrews. If you feel like playing with fire, Controlled Burn meets at A to Zen to practice the right way to handle the flames.

We are days away from the Fourth of July weekend: fireworks, the Downtown wine walk, a carnival at Mills Park, and Wildhorse Children’s Theater's production of Aladdin, Jr. Weekdays in Carson City aren’t shirking their duties though, as there is plenty to do today. Learn some swing dance moves at El Charro Avita or go for a walk with the Parks and Recreation Department. Singer-songwriter, Canyon White, entertains at Living the Good Life. For those with a skewed sense of humor: Mystery Science Theater 3000 makes an appearance at Galaxy Theater tonight.

Carson City to celebrate July 4 holiday weekend with RSVP carnival, fireworks Monday at Mills Park

Back to back weekends filled with events at Mills Park in Carson City culminates this weekend with the annual RSVP 4th of July Carnival and Celebration, which launches Friday.

This will be the 24th year that RSVP has sponsored the holiday weekend carnival, complete with fireworks on Monday, July 4, plus plenty of rides, music, food booths, arts and crafts vendors and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range to close briefly Wednesday

The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range in Carson City will be closed to the public on Wednesday, June 29th, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The range will reopen for normal operations after 9:00 a.m.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will be closing the facility to allow surveying work to be done at the site.

It is primary election day in Nevada. For Carsonites who didn't vote early, you can choose to vote at the Community Center or at the County Clerk's office, regardless of precinct. Join the Nevada National Guard at the Capitol for their Flag Day ceremony and celebration of the Army’s birthday. Mile High Jazz Band has something special in store. Youth Theatre Carson City to hold auditions Saturday for Legally Blonde, Jr.

Youth Theatre Carson City will hold auditions for "Legally Blonde, Jr.' this Saturday at the Carson City Community Center.

The theatre company is looking for actors, singers, and dancers grades K-12. The show will run six performances, July 29-August 7, 2016 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

It's going to be toasty today. Luckily, weekly Parks and Rec 'Easy Walk' starts at 8 a.m., so you'll be off the trail before the sun gets too far overhead. The Brewery Arts Center hosts the Carson City Classic Cinema Club the first Tuesday of each month; join them this evening for trivia and a showing of John Wayne's 'Stagecoach.' Dance the night away to the sounds of big band or cowboys: swing dance lessons are at El Charro Avita, while country line dancing can be found in the Eleventh Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes.

Not going to lie, I'm a lover of June. Not only is it unequivocally summer, it is also my birthday month. So today we say a fond farewell to May and the bizarre winter/spring/winter/summer weather that came with it. Early voting for the primary is underway at the Clerk's office in the Courthouse. Get out and explore the history of the west side of town with the Parks and Recreation easy walk. Head out to the archery range and learn to shoot a bow. Swing dance, line dance, and fire dancing are all out there for you to explore.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Muscle Powered, a Carson City non-profit that works to enhance walking and biking in the community, was recently notified that Carson City’s Ash to Kings Trail was selected as winner of the Coalition for Recreational Trail’s Annual Achievement Award in the Community Linkage category.
